Long-time coworkers and friends recently gathered to celebrate Georgia, a materials team lead at Anderson County Hospital.

Georgia began her career at Anderson County Hospital on April 10, 2000, and officially retired on April 10, 2026—26 years to the day her adventure began. For two and a half decades, Georgia enjoyed rounding on departments and helping track down products they don’t normally stock. She also appreciates the many friendships that have developed through the years, especially those with her back hall coworkers.

“It’s been a fun time,” Georgia says. “I love what I do. And I’m going to miss everybody.”

Geogia’s husband will retire at the end of the year, and the couple has plans to take a cruise in February. She also looks forward to spending more time with her grandkids and reading. Congratulations, Georgia! 🎉

Colorectal cancer leads to more deaths than any other cancer in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, a vast majority of colorectal cancer deaths can be prevented—yet many people are not taking advantage of screening options.

“Colorectal cancer is often called a silent cancer because it rarely presents with symptoms,” says Dr. Megan Morriss, a general surgeon at Allen County Regional Hospital and Anderson County Hospital. “If you’re 45 or older or have any family history of polyps or colon cancer, don’t take your chances. Just get screened.”

A colonoscopy is the most common and effective screening tool for colon cancer. Read more from Dr. Morriss about colonoscopies and colorectal cancer risks: https://heyor.ca/qyDU10

Today, on National Doctors’ Day, we honor the hands that heal, the hearts that carry our community’s health, and the minds that never stop seeking better medicine. Your impact is felt far beyond our hospital walls—in the hope you restore, the lives you save, and the loved ones who return to their families.

Our promise is kept in the daily commitment of our doctors. It is a calling defined by quiet, personal sacrifice: the missed dinners, the long nights at the bedside, and a responsibility that doesn’t end when the shift does. We recognize the physicians who show up, who become the steady anchor a family needs, and who offer a reassuring presence that says: “We are in this together.”

To our physician partners: Thank you for the expertise you bring, the sacrifices you make, and the humanity you offer every person in your care.

𝗛𝗲𝗹𝗽 𝘂𝘀 𝘀𝗮𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝗻𝗸𝘀. We invite you to take a moment to thank a doctor in the comments and let them know the difference they have made in your life.

When a sharp stomach pain stopped 12-year-old Kaylee in her tracks, her mother, Carissa, knew something wasn't right.

Carissa brought Kaylee to the Emergency Department at Anderson County Hospital thinking the pain in her daughter’s side was something minor. However, it turned out to be serious.

"The staff did blood work and a CT scan," Carissa says. "We were told it was her appendix and it would have to be taken out."

When Anissa, the board-certified nurse practitioner on staff in the Emergency Department, found the cause of the problem was appendicitis, she reassured Kaylee everything would be OK.

“Most kids get pretty nervous, so we did a lot of reassuring and education,” Anissa says. “Sometimes kids do better when they know what to expect.”

Anissa worked with Anderson County EMS to quickly transfer Kaylee and her mother to Children’s Mercy Hospital to receive the critical care she needed.

Alex, an advanced emergency medical technician (AEMT), operated the ambulance.

“We have a stuffed animal we keep on the truck to give to kids because it can be scary if they’ve never been in an ambulance before,” Alex says.

Kaylee underwent an emergency appendectomy—and thanks to quick care and smooth recovery, she was soon back to her energetic self.

“Kaylee was back to her normal self that weekend,” Carissa says. “I love going to Anderson County. The staff listens to me when I advocate for my child.”

A career in health care offered the balance that Dr. Cecilia Mathis—a family medicine physician at Anderson County Hospital's Family Care Center—was seeking.

“I wanted a career that would be both challenging and rewarding, one that would push me to learn every day,” Dr. Mathis said. “Medicine seemed like the perfect fit.”

Her own experiences as a patient helped shape her path. As a teenager, the care she received from her family doctor and an endocrinologist showed her how meaningful and lasting the impact good medical care have on a patient's quality of life. That perspective continues to guide her work today.

“Seeing a variety of patients, hearing all the amazing stories and life experiences a patient has had, and caring for all of the adorable babies is what keeps me motivated,” Dr. Mathis said. “Being able to care for individuals and families I know from the community is a very unique and rewarding part of the job.”

Dr. Mathis values Saint Luke’s for its collaborative environment and strong support system, including the team she works with every day, as well as access to consult with specialists when needed. On , we recognize and honor Dr. Mathis for the dedication and expert care she provides to patients each day. 💙

Being a physician is about more than medicine for Dr. Mackenzie Peterson—it’s about building relationships that span years. As a family medicine physician at Anderson County Hospital's Family Care Center, she cares for patients from their first checkups through every stage of life.

“I became a physician to help people improve their health,” Dr. Peterson said. “My goal every day is to give patients the information and tools they need to do just that. I want my patients to understand that their health is truly in their hands.”

Her career has taken her across the globe, including a medical mission trip to Mali, Africa.

“It was early on in my career and one of my best experiences as a physician,” Dr. Peterson said. “I could only do a little for each individual, but seeing the joy on their faces reinforced the importance of serving others.”

It is a lesson that continues to guide both her work and the advice she shares with future physicians. For women considering medicine, her guidance is grounded in that sense of purpose.

“Find your passion,” Dr. Peterson said. “Know what brings you joy at the end of the day, and develop your career to focus on that.”

On , we honor Dr. Peterson and the women physicians at Saint Luke’s whose compassion and expertise make a lasting impact. 💙
