Gaston County United Way’s Senior Spring Clean program is now accepting applications for Gaston County residents age 60 and older. This initiative provides seniors with essential spring-cleaning support to keep their homes safe and comfortable.

COME GROW WITH US! We are currently accepting applications to rent out garden beds at the Aunt Charlotte McClee Community Garden, located at 604 N. York Street, Gastonia.
1. Submit an Application for a plot in the Aunt Charlotte McClee Community Garden to Keep Gastonia Beautiful.
2. Keep Gastonia Beautiful Selects Garden Members for the growing season (April-December).
Garden applications are more likely to be accepted for gardeners who:
a. Live in or have ties to the Highland Community
b. Volunteer at off-season Garden Events
c. Pay their yearly membership dues on time

Charter Mom and Life Member Associate Donyel Barber was elected as the first black woman to serve on the City Council in Gastonia, NC. Her leadership has opened the door for two other black women to serve on city council in Gastonia and has changed the face of politics in Gaston County forever.

Leading the conversation is Shirlette Ammons — a Black, q***r, Southern truth-teller and Emmy and Peabody Award–winning TV producer, poet, and musician from eastern North Carolina. In 2025, Shirlette released the audio series Tending, profiling Black farmers involved in a landmark class action lawsuit against the USDA — a fight that became one of the largest class action civil rights lawsuits in U.S. history.
