I said no to a free trip to Costa Rica
Not something I ever thought I’d do… and yet, it was one of the easiest decisions I’ve made in a long time.
Because it meant missing my birthday with my family.
Instead, I spent the day exactly how I wanted:
Chinese takeout, cookie cake, my three boys, my husband…
AND opening the doors to my brand new space — Livingston County Therapy Collective.
It was loud, a little chaotic (had a head butt to the nose at one point!), and honestly?
Perfect.
Here’s the thing we don’t talk about enough in leadership and workplace culture:
Values aren’t just something you write on a wall or put in a handbook.
They show up in your decisions.
In the moments where something really good is on the table… and you still choose what matters most to you.
For me, it was a no-brainer
not because Costa Rica didn’t sound amazing,
but because I’m clear on my values.
And that clarity makes decisions easier, not harder.
So here’s the question I keep coming back to in my work with teams:
Does your organization just talk about values…
Or are you helping your people actually define their own and recognize whether they’re in alignment.
Because that’s where sustainability lives.
That’s how you build employees who aren’t constantly torn between their work and their life.
That’s how you create cultures where people don’t burn out trying to be everything to everyone.
Clear values → aligned decisions → resilient people.
And sometimes that looks like saying no to Costa Rica…
and yes to cookie cake on your birthday.
I wouldn’t change a thing.
If this is something your team is missing, let’s talk. 📫
