Happy World Diabetes Month! November is recognized globally as the month where communities across the globe focus on education, prevention, and support for those affected by the disease. Diabetes affects over 530 million adults worldwide — about 1 in 10 people are affected by diabetes ❤️💉🩸

In primary care, we run A1c testing (which our lovely RN, Ivan, is doing) to help screen for, diagnose, and monitor diabetes. We manage medications for Type 2 diabetics, and collaborate with specialists for medication management in Type 1 diabetics. We also work with other specialists (such as podiatrists, ophthalmologists, dietitians, and pharmacists) to ensure diabetes care is comprehensive and continuous.

One of our first year residents, Dr. Flatt, has been a Type 1 diabetic for over 25 years! 🤍

Your P*P is your first-line partner in every step of your diabetes journey! Happy Diabetes Month to all our diabetic patients! 🩸💉

Chief Spotlight: Dr. Kirsten Young
Becoming chief isn’t just about leading — it’s about growing, learning, and lifting others up along the way.

🩺 What’s one thing that surprised you about becoming chief?
“I expected to work closely with my co-residents and program leadership, but I didn’t anticipate how integral collaboration would be with people across the entire health system—hospital administration, nursing leadership, pharmacists, and specialists. So many of our goals, whether related to education, workflow, or patient care, depend on partnerships outside the residency itself.”

🩺 What’re you looking forward to most this year?
“We’ve been restructuring our didactic curriculum to create a more cohesive and engaging educational experience, and we’ve introduced a system to help recognize and strengthen high-quality guest lecturers. I’m especially excited about launching our interprofessional education sessions with nursing and pharmacy teams—building opportunities for residents to learn alongside other disciplines has been a passion project of mine.“

Happy Friday, friends! 🥳🍁🍂 check out some pictures from in Anaheim this year! Our two lovely chiefs, Drs. Yang & Young, were learning, leading, and loving every minute of it! They had the opportunity to build leadership skills, attend incredible primary care sessions, and hear from some of the leaders shaping the future of Family Medicine.

Plus- they got to visit with Dr. Annie Phung who was a Northwestern Delnor residency graduate! Dr. Phung is now practicing at Kaiser Permanente after completing her Palliative Followship at UCLA 😊

Please take a moment to help us welcome our newest faculty member with a Faculty Spotlight Q&A🔦✨

⭐️ Ischel Gonzalez Kelso, MD ⭐️

Q: As a graduate of the program, what brought you back to Northwestern - Delnor as faculty?
A:Coming back to Delnor felt right. This program shaped me—not just as a physician, but as a teacher, a colleague, and a leader. The faculty here live and breathe Family Medicine. Their passion for teaching, for pushing boundaries, and for supporting one another is palpable. It’s a place where everyone is constantly striving to be better—for our patients, for our learners, and for each other. I knew that if I wanted to keep growing, there was no better place to do it. I’ve always said Delnor is a powerhouse program—not just because of what it offers, but because of people and community we’ve built.

Q:What specific areas of interest do you have within family medicine?
A:Family Medicine is rooted in relationships, community, and continuity so it is hard to choose just one area. But if I had to choose, I’m particularly passionate about LGBTQIA+ medicine. I spent the last year in fellowship learning all I can for the community and I’m more than excited to share that knowledge with anyone who wants to learn!

Q: What are your hobbies outside of medicine?
A:Food is definitely my happy place! I’m known to Doordash a bit too often, and I never miss a chance to turn a meeting or check-in into a dinner outing—especially with our Equity For All committee or my advisee family. Good food has a way of bringing people together, and for me, it’s a fun way to connect.

Q: What is your favorite local gems in the Geneva area?
A: Buttermilk. I’ve never lived in a place that took brunch so seriously.

We are so excited that Dr. Kelso is back to work as faculty and are grateful to learn from her fellowship experience in LGBTQIA+ medicine fellowship. 💜
