BITING

Why do children bite?
Because they get a powerful reaction!
Once a child gets a powerful reaction from a behavior, it becomes an irresistible tool. Some of the most intense biters I have worked with were children who spoke spontaneously at three to five-word sentence level!

What do we do?
We use an Extinction Program.
An Extinction Program eliminates the behavior by ignoring the behavior.

How do we use the Extinction Program?
If YOU are bitten:
1) TRY to stay calm.
2) Do NOT name the bite or the biter.
3) Do not try to reason with the biter.
4) Ignore the biter. (Within safety limits.)
5) Treat yourself to a favorite comfort.

If another child is bitten:
Accept that the child will almost always react.
REPEAT steps 1-4 above.
Treat the bitten child to a comfort.

TAKE NOTE:
When you are doing this program correctly, the biter will most likely attempt to bite again in order to make sure that you were “listening!”

BE ON THE LOOKOUT and repeat the above steps if necessary!

VERY IMPORTANT.....EVERY adult in the biter’s life MUST be aware and cooperative with this program!

Dear families, be safe in this weather. Stay home if you can. If you must travel, bundle up in layers exposed skin is at eisk for frostbite after only 10 minutes of exposure. If you are driving, keep your gas tank at least half full to prevent gas lines from freezing. If you get stick on the side of the tollway, call *999 and request riadaide assistance At home, let your faucets dribble to prevent water pipes from freezing and bursting.

It’s that time of year! Celebrating, visiting and traveling! When we gather, we are eager to find out everything we want to know. Here are some recommendations to interact with a child under three-years old:
* Let them come to you first.
* Get down to their level.
* Avoid bombarding them with questions. Just say “Hi!,” “I’m glad to see you!,” and “I love you!”
* Observe what they are wearing, looking at, touching and playing with. Comment that you like it too!
* React to any of their attempts to communicate with encouragement.
* Remember that this time is year is overstimulating and that small children will want to move around a LOT more or need frequent sensory breaks.
* A small child’s self-care routine
may be “off schedule.”
