Insulin is the hormone that controls how your body uses the food you eat, and whether you burn fat or sugar ( carbs) for fuel.

Ideally, when you eat , your food is broken down into protein, fat, and sugar . Sugar should be used as an immediate source of fuel or stored in your muscles,and liver for later use. Fat should be broken down and used as a constriction material and for fuel when we go without food for extended periods.

Stress, inflammatory foods, medications, hormone changes alcohol, sedentary lifestyle and inadequate intake of protein and fats can make your body produce more insulin or create more insulin resistance.

Women over 40 have a high risk of insulin resistance due to hormonal changes and the reduction of estrogen, and progesterone production.
