No journey is without its pitfalls. As humans, it is very natural for us to make mistakes, especially when it comes to something so fickle as sobriety. Between the physical and mental aspects of the recovery process, it’s easy to fall into old habits and patterns that push us further away from our goals. Let’s take a look at some common mistakes people make on their journeys to sobriety and how we can take steps in avoiding them:

✨ Thinking you can do it alone - It's common to think that sobriety is a journey best done alone, but you should be sure to lean on outside support systems like close friends & family.
✨ Not treating a co-occuring disorder - Addiction is quite often pared with a mental health condition, which is equally as important in treating.
✨ Having unrealistic expectations - Be sure not to hold yourself to standards that you won't be able to meet instantly. Recovery takes time.
✨ Comparing your journey to others - No two sobriety journeys look the same - it's going to be different for everybody.
✨ Feeling ashamed of your struggles - Everybody struggles with something. You should never feel ashamed for it.
✨ Returning to your pre-treatment lifestyle - Try to avoid the reintroduction of roxic relationships, friendships, and places after treatment.
✨ Thinking the journey ends after rehab - The path to recovery is a full one that transcends the detox and rehab process. You will always need to put in the work.

The good news is that you are completely capable of meeting all of your sobriety goals. Even if you do make a few mistakes, you need to be forgiving to yourself. This is not an easy path to take and just taking that first step is a feat in itself.

There are many cases where grief can lead to more intense mental health conditions. It usually isn’t the main cause, but is often the trigger for the onset of the disorder. In other words, it can be a starting point.
It can be hard to tell the difference between grief and depression, as the two conditions often share the same symptoms, including:

- uncontrollable crying
- changes in sleep
- changes in appetite
- trouble concentrating
- low self-esteem

Your mental health issues did not develop in a vacuum. Genetics, addiction, trauma, all of these factors and more may have contributed to your mental illness. And at Georgetown Behavioral Hospital, we help you face these underlying causes.

Just like your mental illness does not come from a single cause, your treatment should come from a variety of mental healthcare professionals. This team will work with you at every stage of recovery to empower you to lead a happy, healthy lifestyle.

At Georgetown Behavioral Hospital, your days will be structured with enjoyable, recovery-based activities. These will include individual and group therapy, in addition to regular, personal meetings with your treatment team to discuss both successes and barrier to recovery. By giving you a regular schedule, our programming helps you establish healthy, constructive routines to improve your ability to function in daily life.

From your initial assessment to discharge planning, our compassionate care staff will be there for you.
