HAPPENING THIS WEEK: Tidelands Health and YMCA of Coastal Carolina are offering a free community health fair at Tidelands Health Georgetown Family YMCA this Wednesday, Jan. 21.

This is a great chance to check your blood pressure and bone density and speak with health experts about ways to improve your overall health, including weight management, physical therapy, stroke prevention and more. For a low cost, on‑site lab tests will also be available to help assess your overall health, including prostate health, blood sugar, thyroid function and more.

The event will run from 7-11 a.m. and is open to everyone.

While the flu can affect anyone, some people are more likely to get very sick or develop complications like pneumonia or hospitalization.

👶 Young Children (especially under age 5)

🤧 Flu or a Cold? How to Tell the Difference

Not all sniffles are the same! Knowing the difference can help you get the right care faster.

🤒 Flu
• Sudden onset
• Fever & chills
• Body aches
• Extreme fatigue
• Headache
• Dry cough
• Symptoms hit hard and fast

🤧 Common Cold
• Gradual onset
• Runny or stuffy nose
• Sneezing
• Mild cough
• Mild fatigue
• Usually no fever (or very low)

⚠️ When to take it seriously:
High fever, chest pain, trouble breathing, dehydration, or symptoms lasting more than a few days—especially in kids, seniors, or those with chronic conditions.

💉 Good news: The flu shot can reduce the severity of illness and help prevent complications.

SAVE THE DATE: Parent & Community Education Night – V**e Talk

Georgetown County School District will host a Parent & Community Education Night in each attendance zone, with the first session taking place in Andrews. Andrews parents and community members are encouraged to attend, and all parents across the district are welcome.

This session will provide important information about youth va**ng, the health risks associated with va**ng, and current trends impacting students. Practical prevention strategies and resources available to parents and the community will be shared.

South Carolina is experiencing very high flu activity right now, with cases among the highest in the U.S.

🦠 Flu activity in SC is currently at the highest levels according to CDC tracking—placing our state among the worst hit in the country right now.

📊 Experts at MUSC are monitoring very high rates of flu, with emergency departments seeing significant flu diagnoses.

📈 Last week’s data showed that SC’s flu spread was among the worst in the nation heading into 2026.

This week we will be sharing tips on how to prevent the flu, what to do if you get the flu and and more tips and tricks to keep you and your family healthy !
