BREED OF THE WEEK

The Rottweiler is a large, powerful, and intelligent working dog known for being a loyal and protective family companion, descended from Roman mastiffs. They are muscular with a black and tan coat, require at least an hour of daily exercise, and need early socialization and consistent training to manage their protective instincts and strong build. While aloof with strangers, they are affectionate with their families and excel as guard dogs, police dogs, and search and rescue dogs.
Key Characteristics
Temperament: Confident, courageous, loyal, and protective, with a calm and affectionate side for their family.
Appearance: Large, muscular build with a short black coat and rust-colored markings.
Intelligence: Highly intelligent and eager to please, making them responsive to training.
History: Descended from drover dogs used by Roman legions, they were historically used to herd livestock and pull carts.
Care and Needs
Exercise: Needs at least 60 minutes of vigorous daily exercise, such as walks, hikes, or sports, to prevent boredom.
Training: Requires early and consistent training and socialization to manage their protective nature and strong instincts.
Grooming: Their short coat sheds heavily year-round.
Health: Prone to certain hereditary conditions, so responsible breeding is important.
Suitability
Best for experienced owners who can provide firm leadership, training, and plenty of activity.
Excellent guardians and companions for families who understand and can meet their needs.

STAFF OF THE WEEK. Angelina - Lead Veterinary Technician

Raised in Killeen Texas, Angelina began her pre-veterinary track with a pre-vet specialized biology degree from Iowa State University. In the clinic, Angelina is amazing with our high-anxiety patients, known as the “Cat Whisperer,” and strives to create a positive experience for all of our patients. Angelina originally wanted to be a veterinarian, but, in her career, fell in love with nursing and chose the vet tech path instead. She is currently pursuing her Veterinary Technician certification at Penn Foster. Outside of work, Angelina enjoys quality time with her husband, four dogs, and three cats, and she also offers in-home pet sitting services.

BREED OF THE WEEK
Papillon Mix
Size: Small, usually 6-11 inches tall and weighing 5-15 pounds.
Coat: Can have a long, short, wavy, or wiry coat, depending on the parent breeds.
Color: Comes in a wide variety of colors, including white, gold, brown, tan, cream, and black.
Temperament
Affectionate and loyal: Known for being loving, alert, and devoted to their families.
Intelligent: Both parent breeds are intelligent, though the mix may be stubborn and challenging to train.
Good with children: Generally better suited for homes with older children, but early socialization is recommended for all pets.
Health
Potential issues: Like all mixed breeds, they can inherit health problems from their parent breeds.
Common concerns: Patellar luxation (a joint issue) and dental problems are potential concerns inherited from the Chihuahua.
Lifespan: They have a relatively long lifespan of 14-16 years.
Care
Training: Early socialization is crucial. They can be difficult to train due to a stubborn streak, so patience is key.
Exercise: They are active and enjoy playtime, but their exercise needs are moderate given their small size.
