Sam Smith, Health + Nutrition Coach

Sam Smith, Health + Nutrition Coach I’ve spent a lifetime complaining about how unhealthy our society/country/culture is. I am a fairly regular person. (If you eat chips with salsa, that’s healthy.

I am a health and nutrition coach focused on helping people find simple, easy, and non-restrictive ways to be healthful through awareness, education, and small changes. As a result, I’ve also spent a lifetime reading, researching, and trying out ways to eat and live healthier than the average person in the United States. I’ve also had an aversion to pharmaceuticals – the companies themselves more than the medications – and have read into alternative health treatments. Having said that, its important to know that I am not a typical skinny, granola-eating, make-up shunning, hippie naturopath. In fact, I love make-up, my favorite drinks are rum & OJ, Moscow mule, and a good margarita, and I can dig into a bag of tortilla chips with gusto. Right?) I do love doing yoga, though, and that’s my preferred form of exercise. So why did I want to start a blog? Well, mainly because I enjoy writing and was looking for a way to keep in practice. What better way to stay motivated than writing about a passion? And I get pretty passionate about food and health. Some bullet points. I:
- grew up in west Texas
- moved to Austin in high school (via San Antonio)
- earned a degree in Anthropology from UT-Austin (minor in Geography)
- traveled several times to France and England
- studied abroad at Oxford University
- lived in NYC for 4 years
- worked with a lot of famous movie people as part of a film industry non-profit

And now, I live in a suburb of Austin, Texas. I have two kids, and am step-mom to 4 more. I’ve worked as a graphic designer, program manager, and most recently as a Realtor. I love that I have a relationship with Jesus Christ and my church family at HCBC-Austin is amazing. I could go on… but you’ll find out plenty as you read through my posts.

Depending on where you live, it may or may not be big news to get rain. Where I live in Central Texas, we have been existing in the state of mostly drought for a few years now, and this winter was one of the driest I can remember...
SO, rain on April 2nd is a momentous event! For example, i went to check the garden this morning and saw that the Sweet Peas I planted a few weeks ago (and have been watering daily) have all of the sudden sprouted just because of rain!
Keep doing those rain dances so our farmers and gardeners can experience abundance this spring 🤗

Let’s talk about the unsung hero of midlife health: Fiber. 🌾 It keeps our digestion smooth, our hearts happy, and our blood sugar steady. If you want to feel lighter and more energized, don't look for a "detox" tea—just look for more beans, seeds, and oats.

Fiber is the foundation of feeling good!

It's time for weekend farmers markets - which one is your favorite?

There’s a special kind of "soul nutrition" in knowing where your food comes from. 👩‍🌾 Taking a slow stroll through the market isn't just about the groceries—it’s about the community, the fresh air, and choosing ingredients that grew under the same sun we did. What’s your favorite seasonal find right now?

Connect with your food, and you’ll connect with yourself.

Is it "brain fog," or are you just thirsty?💧
Our thirst signals can get a little quiet as we get older, but our need for hydration only grows. If you're feeling sluggish this afternoon, try a big glass of water before that second coffee. Your joints (and your glow) will thank you!
Hydration is the simplest form of self-care.

You've tried every diet. You're not broken — the diets are. Here's what actually works. 🌿

I've worked with so many women who come to me feeling like failures. They've done keto, done Whole30, done calorie counting, done the juice cleanses. And every single time, the results don't last.

Here's the truth nobody in the diet industry wants you to hear:

Restriction doesn't work long-term. Not because you lack willpower — but because restriction triggers your body's survival response. Your hormones shift. Your hunger signals amplify. And the weight comes back.

What DOES work?
→ Eating enough of the right foods (yes, MORE food)
→ Understanding how your unique body responds to what you eat
→ Building habits that feel good — not like punishment
→ Getting support from someone who sees your whole picture

This is exactly what we work through inside Vitality by Design. And the results my clients get — without starving themselves — are genuinely incredible.

Save this post if you needed to hear it today. And if you're ready to try a different way, the link is in my bio. 💜

They say we eat with our eyes first, but our cells eat the colors. 🌈 As we navigate our 40s and 50s, those bright pigments aren't just pretty—they are the antioxidants our skin and hearts crave. I’m not counting calories today; I’m counting colors. How many can you get on one plate?

They say how you spend your morning is how you spend your day.
For a long time, my morning ritual was a race against the clock. It was caffeine on an empty stomach and a long list of "should-do's" before I even took a breath.
But lately, I've been changing the story. At this stage in life, our bodies don't just need fuel -- they need kindness.
Today, I'm choosing a breakfast that actually loves me back (hello protein and fiber!) and 5 minutes of quiet before the world starts asking for things. It's a small shift, but it changes everything.
⬇️ Tell me in the comments: what is one non-negotiable part of your morning that makes you feel like you again?

Think you can't meal prep in 10 minutes?
Maybe you can't create an entire meal that quickly but you sure can set yourself up for success! 10 minutes is the perfect amount of time to:
+ Choose a healthy snack for each day and label it
> an apple/pear/fruit
> portion out yogurt and add berries or granola
> put together serving-size cheese with fruit or crackers
+ Create a plan for your lunches all week. Even if you're eating out, you can decide on healthier options ahead of time
+ Same goes for dinner - part of your plan might be to cook one night, so why not make a double recipe and save the leftovers for a lunch or another dinner later in the week!
What else can you do in 10 minutes tonight, so you'll save time and make better choices throughout the week?
