If you use a wheelchair—or if you care for someone who does—you've probably heard of pressure sores, which are skin injuries that can form when there's too much pressure on an area for too long.
Here are a few tips for preventing pressure sores in a wheelchair:
▪️ Change positions regularly to help relieve pressure on high-risk areas like the tailbone and hips.
▪️ Use cushions specifically designed for pressure relief.
▪️ Wash and dry your skin every day, and keep an eye out for redness or irritation.
▪️ Drink plenty of water and maintain a balanced diet to give your body the building blocks it needs to repair damage.
▪️ Wear comfortable, breathable clothing while avoiding tight waistbands, bulky seams, or materials that trap heat and moisture.
▪️ Stay active when you can to keep blood flowing to your skin and muscles. Small exercises like stretching and leg lifts can boost circulation.
