FCHD was notified that a cat from the 3000 block of Garfield Road in Frederick County, Maryland, tested positive for the rabies virus. Frederick County Animal Control collected the stray cat on Wednesday, August 14, 2024, after receiving a report that it attacked two people. The cat was picked up near the intersection of Garfield Road, John Cline Road, and Brown Road. The rabies-positive cat is described as a dark gray domestic shorthair female most likely under a year old with a white neck, chest, belly, and paws.

We recommend that people who may have had contact with this cat between July 31, 2024, and August 14, 2024, consult their health care provider and notify the FCHD’s Community Health Services Office at 301-600-3342. If any pets or livestock had contact with the cat, consult with your veterinarian and notify the FCHD’s Environmental Health Office at 301-600-1717.
