Meet our April Rise Yogi Spotlight, Melissa! 🧘
Check out our full interview below…
✨What brought you to yoga?
“I have known about yoga for as long as I can remember. I always associated it with hippies! Like all you need is love and YOGA!! Really it wasn't on my radar significantly until I was having issues with sciatica and lower back pain due to working in the hospital transferring people on a daily basis, admittedly not always using proper body mechanics. This was about 15 years ago. I totally healed my sciatica doing yoga at home watching videos on my TV and I was hooked. I wanted to learn more, so I began to study at a local studio.
I love the feeling that Yoga offers, of being connected to my body, the empowerment of choice in how to move my body, the dedication to deepening my practice, and the peace of letting go of stress and blocked emotions.”
✨What is your favorite pose, breath, or mindfulness practice? Why?
“This is definitely fluid as my desires and needs change. Right now I would say head stand. I just love that it feels like a reset button for my body. I love the focus involved and the core strength. I am in my head a lot so I feel like the extra blood to my brain doesn't hurt anything as well.”
✨In what ways does your Yoga practice support you "off the mat"?
“Yoga is maybe more meaningful off the mat than on the mat to me. Yoga has really helped me to define who I am as a person. It taught me that the inner journey is just as important, if not more than, the outer journey. It has helped me to learn to enjoy loving my body by doing something nice for it!
That love carries over into all areas of my life and frees me up to love others as well.”
✨What is your favorite thing about practicing at Rise?
“The first thing that comes to mind is that I brought my 16 year old daughter to Rise and she loved it. It means the world to me that she enjoyed the classes, felt comfortable and said she felt so peaceful. The community is welcoming and upbeat, and feels like a safe place to be. Alli has created a space full of intention, thoughtfulness, and care and it shows through the smiles and laughter I see in every class. Every teacher brings their own style and presence to the studio for a very full experience of yoga practice.”
✨What would you tell someone who is considering trying yoga for the first time?
“Do it! What are you waiting for? Are you afraid of falling in love with Yoga?? It is a practice that can change you and your experience of life for the better, if you allow it to, whether you're doing it for physical fitness, for mindfulness, or for deeper connection as well!
Thank you Melissa, for being part of our community at Rise! 💗 You can meet Melissa as she joins our instructional team as a sub in May! 🙏
