An image we use often for teaching our clients about foot mechanics is a classic footprint in the sand. In its simplest form, where do you feel the pressure in your foot while you stand and when you walk? Is it well-distributed? All to the outside? All to the inside?
If all to one side, your footprint will turn to a blob as you either flatten the arch or loose the ball of foot pressure from the ground. For optimal walking mechanics we want to have pressure transfer from the heel to the outer foot, and across to the ball of the foot before pushing off through all toes.
