Pills for life?
Or fix the cause?

What if the reason many people are not getting better is because the root cause has never truly been addressed?

In this powerful conversation, Dr. Todd Adam Born, ND, CNS explains why Functional Medicine focuses on identifying underlying imbalances instead of simply managing symptoms.

Hosted by Al Shan, Founder of Functional Medical Doctors of America, this discussion explores how healthcare is evolving and who can benefit most from a root cause approach.

If you or someone you love has been struggling with chronic symptoms, normal lab results, or long term medication without meaningful improvement, this episode is worth watching.

Your gut does more than digest food.

It communicates with your hormones.
It influences your skin.
It helps regulate your immune system.

When the intestinal barrier becomes compromised, sometimes referred to as increased intestinal permeability (aka “leaky gut”), inflammation can begin affecting systems far beyond the digestive tract.

That is when symptoms start showing up in places that seem unrelated:
- Hormonal shifts.
- Persistent skin issues.
- Immune overreactions.
- Joint pains

Instead of asking, “Which symptom do I treat?”
A better question might be, “What is causing this?

If you have been dealing with unexplained symptoms, this connection is worth exploring.

👇 Which area has been the most frustrating for you — hormones, skin, pain, immunity?

Everyone talks about thyroid and weight… but that’s just the tip of the iceberg!

The real issue? Signaling.

Your thyroid does not work in isolation and is in constant cross talk with the rest of the body. It responds to:
• Chronic stress
• Blood sugar instability
• Inflammation
• Nutrient depletion
• Gut dysfunction

This is why many patients are told:
“Your TSH is normal.”

…yet still experience fatigue, brain fog, cold intolerance, and mood changes.

A number on a lab report doesn’t always reflect functional performance.

The better question isn’t:
“Is my thyroid in range?”

It’s:
“Is my body creating the right conditions for thyroid hormones to work properly?”

If you’ve had thyroid labs before; did they really explain how you feel?

👇 Comment “THYROID” if you want me to break down what a comprehensive thyroid evaluation should include.

I’ll be presenting for two full days at the upcoming Food as Medicine Symposium.

In my professional session, we’ll explore a comprehensive, integrative approach to autoimmune disease, including clinical frameworks I use in complex cases.

In my public talk, I’ll be sharing a functional approach to insomnia and how to think beyond symptom management.

If you’re seeking better answers for your health, or you’re a clinician looking to deepen your approach, this event is designed for both.

You’ve seen this before.

A patient with neuropathy.
Persistent symptoms.
Multiple consults.

Labs come back “normal.”
EMG is inconclusive.
B12? Already addressed.
Supplements? Helped… briefly.

And eventually, the conversation ends with:
“There’s nothing more to do.”

But at BIMS, our clinical experience tells a very different story.

Because neuropathy is rarely just a nerve problem.

When you zoom out and assess the entire system (metabolic dysfunction, immune activation, toxic burden, gut–nerve signaling, mitochondrial stress) patterns begin to emerge that standard workups miss.

And that’s where most approaches stall.

👉 This is for practitioners only.
Not for patients.

Our founder, Dr. Todd Adam Born, ND, CNS, created a focused, clinically grounded training in collaboration with Brendan Penwarden, for practitioners who want to confidently navigate complex neuropathy cases:

A Comprehensive Integrative Approach to Neuropathies,
Inside the training, you’ll learn:
• How to differentiate neuropathy subtypes clinically
• Why conventional approaches often fail
• What to assess when symptoms don’t match testing
• How to think through real-world cases step by step

No theory overload.
No memorized protocols.
Just clear clinical reasoning you can apply immediately.

Details are in the first comment

Chronic heartburn is rarely about acid.
Most of the time, it’s about what’s not working underneath.

Most people are told that heartburn means “too much stomach acid.”
So they take acid blockers, PPIs, or antacids; often for years.

Symptoms may ease for a while.
But for many people, they quietly return.

That’s often because heartburn isn’t the root problem.
It’s a signal.

In real practice, recurring heartburn is commonly linked to issues like:

• Hiatal hernia
When the stomach shifts upward, the valve that keeps acid down can’t function properly.

• H. pylori infection
This bacteria can disrupt digestion and alter normal acid balance, triggering reflux-like symptoms.

• SIBO (small intestinal bacterial overgrowth)
Excess bacteria produce gas and pressure, pushing stomach contents upward.

• Food sensitivities and intolerances
Beyond “common triggers” like spicy foods, coffee, or chocolate, many reactions are unique to an individual’s digestion and physiology.

This is why heartburn can persist, even when acid is reduced.

For many people, the body isn’t lacking medication.
It’s asking for better digestion, balance, and deeper support.

If heartburn keeps returning, it may be worth asking a different question:
“What’s actually causing this in my body?”

Understanding the root cause is often the first step toward lasting relief.

If acid reflux were caused by too much stomach acid,
acid blockers would cure it.
They don’t.

Millions of people take PPIs, antacids, and acid blockers for GERD, often for years.
Yet symptoms frequently return, worsen, or turn into long-term dependency.

Here’s the uncomfortable truth:
In most cases, GERD isn’t caused by excess acid.

It’s linked to some, all, or a combination of impaired/poor digestion, low stomach acid, food sensitivities, and a dysfunctional valve (e.g., sliding hiatal hernia) between the esophagus and stomach.

Acid blockers may reduce burning temporarily, but they don’t fix the root problem.

Long-term use may also lead to:
• Reduced absorption of B12, magnesium, iron, and calcium
• Increased risk of gut infections
• Rebound acid when stopping
• Symptoms being masked, not resolved

GERD isn’t a medication deficiency.
It’s a signal that something deeper needs attention.

💬 If you’ve been on acid blockers long-term and still struggling, you’re not alone. There may be another path forward—don’t wait.

Weight loss doesn’t always equal healing.

GLP-1 medications can be helpful for appetite regulation and short-term weight loss.

But research continues to show that when the underlying metabolic drivers aren’t addressed, weight regain is common once these medications are stopped.

This isn’t about blame.
It’s about biology.

Sustainable health requires looking deeper than the scale:
• metabolic function
• gut health
• hormones
• lifestyle patterns

This article explains it clearly and thoughtfully👇

The goal isn’t just weight loss.
The goal is long-term metabolic healing.

If you’re eating “healthy” but still dealing with inflammation, this might be why.

Many patients come to me feeling confused.
They’ve cut sugar.
They eat clean.
Their labs look “normal.”

Yet they still struggle with:
• joint pain
• bloating
• fatigue
• brain fog
• ongoing inflammation

What often gets missed is this:
Food sensitivities don’t necessarily cause immediate reactions.
They can create slow, quiet inflammation in the gut, as well as systemic symptoms.

When the immune system keeps reacting to certain foods, it doesn’t always scream.
It whispers.

Over time, that constant immune activation can:
• damage the gut lining
• increase intestinal permeability
• trigger systemic inflammation
• worsen autoimmune and hormonal symptoms

And many other health issues

This isn’t about willpower.
And it rarely shows up on standard tests.

Healing begins when we stop chasing symptoms—and start identifying triggers.

If this resonates, you’re not broken.
Your body is communicating.
The real question is: are we listening?
