Happy Earth Day from Heron’s Key 🌎

After several years, we’re excited to see the return of a heron to the pond, a meaningful moment for many in our community. Residents have been thrilled to capture and share photos of our namesake back in the area, making this return even more special.

Its presence reflects the ongoing care of the Harbor Hill Environmental Sanctuary, with stewardship led by our friends at Harbor WildWatch. As a place for wildlife protection and learning, this space supports healthy communities of plants and animals while creating opportunities for connection and exploration.

Moments like this reflect a shared commitment among residents, neighbors, and partners to care for the environment we all share.

A powerful example of community in action.

Our Community Engagement group organized a recent effort that brought residents at Heron’s Key together to support Food 4 All , collecting 562 pounds of food and raising over $7,000 for local families in need.

This is just one of the many ways our residents give back, partnering with local organizations and supporting causes that make a meaningful difference across our community.

We’re grateful for our partnership with Food 4 All, an organization that continues to grow its reach and impact across our region.

Cheers to National Beer Day at Heron’s Key 🍻

Residents enjoyed an afternoon of beer tasting, paired with snacks and great conversation.

A special shoutout to our resident-led Heron’s Brewskey Crew, who helped bring the experience to life and continue to share their passion for craft beer across the community. They’re even working on their own red ale to enjoy and share soon!

Just another example of the connection, creativity, and fun that make life at Heron’s Key so unique.

A little feel-good Friday from Heron’s Key!

In a recent feature by Gig Harbor Now, the story of a resident-led project at nearby Shaw Park and its Little Lending Library was brought to light.

Residents saw a need and came together, bringing collaboration, creativity, and care to every step.

It’s a beautiful reflection of the kind of community our residents create every day.

As one resident shared, “Sure, it took a village, but that’s what Heron’s Key is.”

The Little Free Library at Shaw Park was looking shabby, so people from the nearby retirement community fixed it up.

As more people think ahead about where they want to live as they age, interest in nonprofit senior living communities continues to grow.

In a recent Puget Sound Business Journal article, Emerald Communities CEO Ron Schaefer shares how thoughtful growth, long-range planning, and transparency guide community expansion while protecting the culture and trust that residents value most.

You can read the full article here:

For leaders and families beginning to think more intentionally about the next chapter, the most powerful move is often starting the conversation early. A little St. Patrick’s Day cheer at Heron’s Key!

Earlier this week, one of our team members fully embraced the spirit of the holiday and showed up as our very own leprechaun, spreading smiles with residents and staff across campus.

Safe to say the luck of the Irish made its way around Heron’s Key. It made for a joyful day across campus!

Heron’s Key is a disruptor.
Our residents aren’t slowing down in retirement. They are mentoring local students, funding nearly $100,000 in scholarships, supporting nonprofits like Harbor WildWatch and Food Backpacks 4 Kids, and leading sustainability and community initiatives across Gig Harbor.
