About myself: My focus while obtaining my DVM degree was in small and exotic animals. I’ve kept, shown, raised and basically spent my life with all types of animals and always knew that my life would revolve around the care of animals. My ultimate goal in my practice of veterinary medicine is to provide my furry, feathered, or scaly patients with the care and attention their guardians would expect for themselves. All my life, my home has been filled to overflowing with “little critters” of all types. As long as I can remember I wished to become a veterinarian and have worked towards that goal. I was fortunate enough to attend WSU where I completed my bachelors in veterinary science, graduating Magna Cum Laude. I also obtained my Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from WSU where I was a member of the veterinary honors society of phi zeta and again graduated Magna Cum Laude. Since starting practice at Alta Mesa Animal Hospital in May of 2000, I’ve evolved from an associate position to the hospital’s Medical Director. In 2012 I married a wonderful man who is a practicing human pharmacist. I’m fortunate that my husband shares my passion for animals and understands my dedication to patient care. Purpose: This page was created as an extension of my long held web site and has now evolved to include my own Small & Exotic Pet Hospital in Gilbert, AZ. See www.littlecrittersvet.com

What should every owner know before bringing home a White’s Tree Frog? They can thrive for many years, but only with the right balance of nutrition, environment, and care.

Meet one of our slower (but very adorable) patients. This Sulcata tortoise came in for a wellness exam and we always love getting to see these amazing reptiles. Sulcatas, also known as African Spurred tortoises, are native to the dry, desert regions of North Africa. They’re actually the third largest tortoise species in the world and can live for decades, so they’re definitely a long-term commitment.

They may be laid-back but they’re also super strong and love to dig. In the wild, they burrow to stay cool, and they’ll try to do the same in captivity. As they grow (and they can get over 150 pounds), they need a lot of space to explore and a warm, dry environment to stay healthy.

Diet is a big part of their care. They do best on high-fiber foods like grass and hay, and too many fruits or protein-rich foods can actually cause health issues. Access to UVB lighting or natural sunlight is also really important for proper shell and bone development.

Exams like this are a great way to make sure everything is on track as they grow. We love helping care for unique pets like this and making sure they stay happy and healthy for years to come. If you have an exotic pet that’s in need for an exam please give us a call at (480)696-7744 to get their next appointment scheduled.

Why are these two White’s tree frogs different shades of green… is it personality, camouflage, or something else entirely?

Meet one of our recent patients, a Goffin's Cockatoo who stopped by for a wellness exam. Goffin's cockatoos are known for their playful, curious, and highly intelligent personalities. They are often described as affectionate birds that form strong bonds with their owners and love interactive play and mental stimulation.

Originally from the Tanimbar Islands in Indonesia Goffin's cockatoos are one of the smaller cockatoo species, but they make up for their size with big personalities. They are excellent problem-solvers and have been studied for their ability to use tools and complete complex tasks.

These birds thrive on enrichment and social interaction, which makes regular veterinary care especially important to monitor both their physical health and overall well-being. Routine exams help ensure they are maintaining a healthy diet, proper feather conditions, and good behavioral health. If your Goffin's cockatoo is due for an exam please give us a call at (480)696-7744 to schedule their next wellness exam.
