Sometimes it feels like so much goes into our mental health, it can be hard to boil down an action plan into small, easily digestible bites. But really, there are five major pillars that can help support your best possible mental health outcomes:

Sleep: High-quality rest a necessity for mental wellness! Sleep is essential to cognitive function, emotional regulation, and stress management. Without good quality sleep, we are all more vulnerable to developing irritability, depression, and anxiety.

Nutrition: Food is fuel for not only just our physical body but also our mental health. Brain function and mood are enhanced with nutrient-dense foods, rich in omega-3 fatty acids, antioxidants, and vitamins.

Social: Being connected and "plugged in" to a community can boost self-esteem and promote feelings of belonging. Social isolation, on the other hand, can lead to an increased risk of anxiety and depression. Engaging in activities in your community, investing in relationships, and leaning on others for support can do wonders for sustaining your mental health.

Spiritual: This is a broad category that can include prayer, time in nature, meditation, or even practices like yoga or tai chi. Whatever path you choose, spirituality and mindfulness can offer a sense of connection, purpose, and peace, helping to enhance our connection to self and others, reduce stress, and promote a positive outlook.

Movement: Getting some exercise can be a dynamic mood booster! Not only does physical activity reduce stress hormones, it releases endorphins--a natural mood enhancer. You don't have to join a gym or go "beast mode" to get results--some pool time, a brisk walk, or an impromptu dance party are all enough activity to help you see the benefits to your mental health!

"Trauma is not the bad things that happen to you, but what happens inside you as a result of what happens to you"

This quote from Gabor Mate is so helpful for contextualizing trauma. It is not the thing that happens that makes it trauma, but how it changes you. The same thing can happen to different people and they may respond in totally different ways. There is no right or wrong way; your experience is your own, it is valid, and it deserves to be honored.

Perfectionism is not only unnecessary...it's impossible! It's okay to make mistakes because we learn from them--and modeling that process to our children is actually a very beautiful thing. What matters is that you're doing your best. Mothers can experience so much pressure to perform and live up to ever more lofty standards set by their families, their peers, social media...the list goes on. What really matters is that you're trying your best, whatever your best looks like today.

This season of life is full of uncertainty:

You can’t see inside your body.
You can’t guarantee your baby’s safety.
Your hormones are shifting.
Sleep is disrupted.
Your identity is changing.
Old trauma can resurface.
Your brain goes into high alert.

Reassurance becomes a way to calm the alarm.

And if you have a history of trauma? Reassurance can feel like survival. It may be the only way your nervous system knows how to settle. This is something we can work on in therapy, so you can learn to be okay in the uncertainty.

If you’re constantly asking:

“Does this seem normal?”
“Are you sure the baby is okay?”
“What if something bad happens?”
“Can you promise I’m not going to hurt my baby?”
“Should I call the doctor again?”

You’re not being dramatic. You're not being irrational.
But you’re probably anxious. Your nervous system is trying to regulate itself through reassurance.

But here’s the part no one explains:

Reassurance gives relief… and that relief accidentally trains anxiety to come back stronger. This is a cycle we can break in therapy, giving you the tools to handle uncertainty and ambiguity in a healthier, more appropriate way.

Reassurance can feel good.

🌀 It calms the spiral.
🆘 It lowers the panic.
💨 It helps you breathe again.

So why does anxiety keep coming back?

Because every time you ask:
“Are you sure the baby is okay?”
“Does this seem normal?”
“Promise I’m not going to hurt them?”
..and you feel relief...your brain learns:

⚠️ The only way to feel safe is to check.

Pregnancy and postpartum are full of uncertainty: Your body changes. Your hormones shift. Sleep disappears. If you have a trauma history, your nervous system may already be on high alert.

🩵 Reassurance isn’t weakness. It’s your brain trying to protect you.

But long term, it can quietly teach:
“I can’t handle not knowing.”
“I need outside input to feel safe.”

Healing isn’t about eliminating every scary thought.
It’s about building the capacity to feel anxious, and still trust yourself.

If you’re stuck in the checking, Googling, asking-again loop…you might just be caught in a reassurance cycle.

And that’s something we can work on.

In therapy, we learn that strength isn’t about choosing one feeling over another; it’s about making space for both. You can be grateful and grieving, confident and uncertain, healing and still hurting. Our mental health can only improve when we allow complexity, trusting that holding two truths at once isn’t a flaw, but rather emotional intelligence in action.
