There's a lot of talk about "trauma-informed care" lately, so we felt like it might be helpful to dig into the what and why of it all. Trauma-informed care is helpful for therapy because it creates the conditions people need to feel safe enough to heal. This model is guided by six core principles:
🩵 Safety: Creating physical and emotional environments where you feel secure, respected, and at ease.
🩵 Trust & Transparency: Being clear, honest, and consistent so you know what to expect and why.
🩵 Peer Support: Valuing connection and shared understanding as part of healing.
🩵 Collaboration & Mutuality: Working together as partners in care, recognizing your expertise in your own experience.
🩵 Empowerment, Voice & Choice: Centering your strengths and honoring your autonomy, preferences, and boundaries.
🩵 Cultural, Historical & Gender Awareness: Providing care that is responsive to identity, context, and lived experience.
At its core, trauma-informed care asks not ‘What’s wrong with you?’ but ‘What happened to you—and how can we support you?’
