Removing these minimal accessibility provisions (that disabled people fought for) won’t yield significant savings but will silence vital disabled voices.

When society isolates disabled individuals, we all suffer the loss of their valuable contributions and diverse perspectives. Accessibility enriches our communities and serves everyone’s interests.

Setting boundaries can be really scary when you haven’t done it before. What is something that you want to know more about surrounding boundaries?

STOP BEING SO HARD ON YOURSELF! Shame and perfectionism are such sticky emotions, they make a mess everywhere. Perfectionism sets us up to fail, and shame fuels that by continuing to be the voice in our heads that say "that was bad, try again, and make it better."

📣 Hear me out. I know that this is a unique take on grief, but grief allows us to be exactly who we are. Grief gives us space to feel our emotions and process them. It is a guide, and it is helpful when we allow it to be.

You should set some boundaries. ❤️
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is just one example of responding in real-time. In the example, the "person" shows the other human that this is a firm boundary, it is not flexible or up for negotiation.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
This is also something that I will talk about often with my clients. I want you to know that you are not alone if you are afraid to set a boundary. It is scary to tell someone that you have a need that needs to be met, with no negotiation. Remember that you deserve to have this need met.

It is normal to miss your old life. It is normal to miss the person that you were before your disability. Give yourself some time and space. Remember that emotions are not logical, give yourself validation.

❤️ I hear it all of the time, we feel like if we grieve then we are saying goodbye to our previous selves. It is not true, you will always be the person that you are. You can build on who you are, none of it ever goes away.

For example, I am,
a calligrapher
a psychology nerd
a star wars fanatic (since I was very young)
an avid RuPaul fan
a lover of Rick and Morty
a therapist (a passionate therapist)
a human 🥳
a lover of neurobiological modalities of therapy
a fur baby mom
a skin pup mom 😜
in addition to all of these, I am disabled.

We can add, we don't subtract. ❤️

We just want to have our environments be accessible, and they are not. On top of not living in an accessible world, we limit our own tools because "someone else has it worse." I can not tell you how many times I have heard this. It is time for all of us to advocate and start the process of getting our needs met. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
How have you advocated for yourself lately?⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
