Job Summary
The Direct Support Professional provides compassionate, person-centered support to individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities in day program settings. The DSP assists individuals with daily living skills, fosters independence, and encourages active participation within their home and community, as outlined in their Individual Support Plan (ISP).
Key Responsibilities
• Facilitate skill-building and vocational activities to help individuals develop independence.
• Provide transportation to and from the day program, as well as for community outings and appointments.
• Accompany individuals on community inclusion activities, such as volunteering, going to the library, and participating in local events.
• Assist with the self-administration of medications and monitor for any health changes, accurately documenting all observations.
• Schedule and transport individuals to medical appointments, advocating for their needs when necessary.
• Implement behavior support plans and crisis intervention strategies, following established protocols.
• Respond to medical emergencies and administer first aid or CPR as required.
Communication and Documentation
• Maintain clear, timely, and accurate daily documentation, including incident reports, progress notes, and communication logs.
• Communicate effectively with families, supervisors, and other team members to provide the best possible support.
• Attend all required meetings and training sessions to stay current on best practices and regulatory requirements.
Working Conditions
This role involves working in various settings, including residential homes, day program facilities, and community locations.
The work is both physically and emotionally demanding, yet highly rewarding.
Qualifications and Skills
• High school diploma or GED equivalent is required.
• Must be 21 years of age
• Previous experience working with individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities is preferred.
• You must possess a valid driver's license, proof of insurance, and a clean driving record.
• Have a clean driving record
Please provide a Department of Motor Vehicles driving record. This can be obtained by visiting the DMV and requesting a copy of your driving record.
• Excellent interpersonal skills, patience, and a compassionate attitude.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
• Successful completion of a background check, drug screening, and required training (e.g., CPR, First Aid, Crisis Prevention Intervention).
o Must pass a Department of Family Services Registry Background Check
o Pass a National Criminal Background Check
• Physical ability to perform tasks such as lifting, bending, and assisting with mobility, as required.
