Over 5 million Americans are diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease and the majority of them are 65 years and older. Alzheimer’s is the most typical type of dementia that negatively impacts a person’s cognitive and behavioral processes. Symptoms can be spotted as early as 40-50 years old and it is...

Bones: “… the skeleton is not just a nice set of mechanical supports. Bones constantly remodel themselves in response to the body’s needs, and they’re in constant communication with other parts of the body. Bone is a busy tissue with broad influence, and it’s working behind the scenes during the most basic daily activities.”

Everyone is put together just a little differently. Not only do some of us have parts that others don't, but the parts we have in common are often put together differently. I saw a client once for jaw pain. I noticed her SCM muscles really flared out at her neck more than I'm accustomed to seeing. On palpation, I discovered that instead of attaching at the mastoid process (behind the ear) as they normally do, they attached to her JAW. I had never seen this before, so I did some Googling after the session. Apparently, there are in fact SEVEN common variations for where the SCM attaches -- her's wasn't even one of them.

A restriction I find all the time is between the lower trapezius and the muscles it overlaps, the latissimus dorsi, erector spinae and rhomboid major. This results in poor scapular mobility and, typically, shoulder pain and misalignment. A lot of times this area won't feel tight until you attempt to use it; then it spasms. I have yet to find a helpful stretch or exercise for this other than direct manual work.

I post a lot about adhesions and what to do about them. But how do we avoid them? Adhesions, aside from the surgical variety, typically form as an adaptation to prolonged, excessive mechanical stresses such as tension, friction, and compression. Inflammation can often lead to adhesion as well. These stresses lead to reduced circulation which leads to the laying down of additional tissue for reinforcement. Whatever stresses may be involved, two things are necessary to allow adhesions to really happen; limited motion and limited circulation. If you keep an area moving regularly, that not only limits the ability of adhesions to develop, but also helps maintain circulation to the area. This won't do much for adhesions you already have, but it can prevent the ones you don't.
