During the 2025 A‑10 Championship, VCU guard Joe Bamisile went up for a steal — and came down with a serious injury he didn’t even feel at first. Minutes later, he discovered his finger was split open so badly he could see the bone.

In the locker room, VCU Athletics Chief Medical Officer Dr. Seth Cheatham stepped in. In just 15 minutes, he numbed the injury, stitched it up, wrapped it, and cleared Joe to return.

Joe went back on the court, scored 17 points, and sealed the win with two clutch free throws.

VCU Health Sports Medicine doesn’t just care for elite athletes — they treat community members of all ages, from weekend warriors to anyone recovering from a sports injury. Their team provides comprehensive, immediate care across multiple clinics in the region.

Yug Gulati was just 2 years and 4 months old when he received his diagnosis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy, or DMD – a condition that causes muscles to grow weaker over time. It impacts movement, breathing and heart health. As his parents began researching how to best help their son, the most promising answer was gene therapy with Dr. Amy Harper at Children's Hospital of Richmond at VCU – 8,000 miles from their home in India.

After four hospital stays at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital, Thad Rhodes couldn’t stop thinking about the kindness he received from the nurses and staff. During long, painful nights, he found peace in the small book nook on the fourth floor.

One night, he noticed the shelf was tiny and the selection limited — and he knew exactly how he could give back.

After returning home, Thad built a larger bookshelf and began collecting and buying books to fill it. When he brought it to the unit, the nursing team was overjoyed.

Beach resident Thad Rhodes III has been a patient at Sentara Princess Anne Hospital four times. He wanted to show his appreciation so he made a book shelf for them and donated 100 books.

Hospitals can feel heavy for kids: the beeping monitors, the long hallways, the endless waiting. But this week, Fairfax County Fire and Rescue shattered that world with something extraordinary.

Firefighters traded their gear for capes and masks, transforming into Superman, Spider‑Man, Captain America, and Supergirl. Their mission: bring pure joy to the children inside Inova Children's Hospital.

From life‑threatening lupus flare to thriving teen — Mailinh’s story is a powerful reminder of resilience and expert care.

Not long ago, Mailinh was critically ill from a severe lupus flare that caused multiorgan failure and damaged her lungs. Her UVA Health team placed her on ECMO, a lifesaving therapy that supports the heart and lungs, giving her body time to heal.

With the help of UVA Health’s nationally recognized ECMO program — designated a Platinum Level Center of Excellence — Mailinh stabilized, recovered, and slowly regained her strength.

At Virginia Commonwealth University, earning a doctorate has become a true family tradition for the Cecil family — now spanning four decades and two generations.

Colleen Cecil is on track to earn her MD from VCU School of Medicine on the MCV Campus in 2028, following in the footsteps of her mother, Mary, who graduated in 1990. And just this past December, her brother Thomas earned his PhD in Chemistry — 35 years after their father, Todd, completed the same program.

From walking the same halls to learning from some of the same professors, the Cecil siblings are continuing a legacy built on curiosity, problem‑solving, and a shared love of science.

One choice can change everything — and GRACY is helping young drivers see that clearly.

Three young men recently stood before traffic court judges after being arrested for driving nearly 100 mph. Instead of fines or jail time alone, they were referred to GRACY — Get Real About Choices and Consequences for You — a long‑running program sponsored by VCU Health and brought to Hampton Roads through a partnership with the Level I trauma program at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital.

Led by veteran social worker Jerry Van Harris, GRACY gives participants an unfiltered look at the real‑world impact of reckless driving, impaired decisions, and preventable trauma.
