Chesapeake Sleep Apnea
Our Mission is to raise awareness of Sleep Disordered Breathing by offering free support and cost effective home overnight screening for OSA. Obstructive Sleep Apnea is a disorder in which breathing ceases abruptly during sleep. Sleep Apnea occurs to different degrees in different individuals, but is universally detrimental to overall health and often indicative of other health problems that require attention. Snoring, disruptive in its own right can also affect your health and may lead to Sleep Apnea if not corrected. Research has linked Sleep Apnea to high blood pressure, stroke, drowsiness, heart disease and mood disorders. Obstructive Apnea reduces the amount of oxygen available to the brain, causing a great deal of stress on the body. Co-Morbidity correlations with Obstructive Sleep Apnea:
Hypertension 40-50%
Coronary heart disease 34%
Congestive heart disease 34%
Diabetes 65%
Erectile dysfunction 50%
Renal disease 50%
Fibromyalgia 80%
Nocturnal strokes 84%
What's the connection to Dentistry? In many cases snoring or sleep apnea can be remedied through non-surgical means such as:
CPAP – Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (which holds the throat open using air pressure)
Behavioral changes – (such as sleeping on the side rather than the back)
Diet and exercise
Dental Appliances – fabricated by a dentist who has specific training and certification in the practice of Dental Sleep Medicine. Our Mission is to raise awareness of Sleep Disordered Breathing by offering free coaching support and home overnight testing for Sleep Apnea which is comfortable, affordable, has easy access and confidential. Our goal is to offer these tests to everyone including those who are under-insured or lack medical insurance completely. Our team communicates with patients, families and the whole community to educate individuals on sleep disorders, good sleep hygiene, ways to optimize treatment, methods to improve and monitor compliance with prescribed treatment, and in general assists people in eliminating barriers to care in order to maximize their quality of life. Sleep Disorders touch everyone. If patients find themselves non-compliant to PAP therapy, a custom oral appliance has been the answer for some of these people. Custom Oral Appliances:
•Stop snoring
•Treat obstructive Sleep Apnea
•Can be used in conjunction with CPAP devices ◦To decrease CPAP pressures
◦To alternate therapies…..for example when traveling or dating
◦To avoid skin irritations from straps or masks
◦To secure nasal pillows or custom masks
