Rest in Peace, Jared 🤍
It seems almost sacred that, when creating his Freedom Family Counseling bio (that brief space where clients get a glimpse of what mattered most to him.) Jared chose this quote by Jim Elliot:
“He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain what he cannot lose.”
In 1956, Jim Elliot and four other young husbands and fathers were martyred while bringing the Good News of Jesus to the Waodani people in Ecuador. What followed was extraordinary. Their wives returned, not in anger, but with forgiveness. Over time, reconciliation took root, and many in the tribe turned to the God of the Bible.
Curiously, my seventh grade P.E. teacher (my favorite teacher) was the son of one of those missionaries. Because of that, I have always felt close to this story.
When Jared chose this quote, he had no idea he would fight and die from cancer just two short years later.
He battled with courage.
Like Jim Elliot, he left young children.
Like Jim Elliot, his life pointed beyond itself.
Out of every quote he could have chosen, this is the one he chose. There is something greater than death. Our reward is in Heaven.
Today we honor Jared’s life and legacy.
Our prayers are with his wife and four children.
