Parents can take steps to prevent teen drug abuse. Most parents already know the basics: Inform yourself about drugs, keep communication open, set the proper example. These are a great start, and good common sense, but parents worry if these basics are enough. Here are four highly effective and practical steps parents can take:
#1 Remember whose house it is. It is your house. Your children are not paying the mortgage or the rent. Reserve the right to enter and inspect your children's rooms at any time. Establish this rule from the start, and there will be no complaint. If you wait until your children are older and then try to inspect "their" rooms, you may hear all about an "invasion of privacy." But if you are unwilling to "invade their privacy," you will risk having them hide drugs somewhere in your own home - the most common place teens hide their drugs. We’ve run Arizona’s longest-standing teen intensive outpatient program since 1991 — a proven, structured, 10-week, always in-person path to sobriety for teens (12–18) struggling with substance use. Our licensed psychologist leads group therapy, and we utilize drug testing and measure outcomes to show real progress — real progress that short-term or virtual options often miss. See the ASAP Program at www.asapaz.com.

At ASAP, for decades we’ve seen parent involvement dramatically change outcomes for teens. Our 10-week, in-person IOP Programs pair family participation with licensed therapists to boost engagement, speed relapse recognition, set rules and boundaries in the home, teach home drug testing, and strengthen home support. Parent sessions build clearer communication and keep treatment on track — because consistent family involvement matters. We’ve been serving Arizona families since 1991, and, predictably, experience shows that when parents stay involved, teens stay more engaged. Visit www.asapaz.com

At ASAP, we want families to understand one clear fact: teens’ brains are still developing, and the new high‑potency THC va**ng poses unique and lasting risks to that development. Teen brains are more vulnerable to addiction and cognitive harm than adult brains — and those effects can interfere with learning, memory, and emotional regulation. We treat these risks directly in our ASAP IOP program, and we help parents intervene early, and powerfully.
