And we are underway!

Today Shaler Hampton EMS and Ross West View EMS are coming together for a joint training day focused entirely on pediatric care.

We present the exact same topics again on Sunday, with all staff having to attend one day or the other.

While pediatric patients make up a small percentage of our overall call volume, when they need us, they are often critically ill or seriously injured. These are low-frequency, high-risk calls — the kinds of patients who can challenge even the most experienced EMS professionals.

That’s exactly why we train.

We train so that when the rare call comes in, our response isn’t uncertain — it’s confident. We train because our communities deserve nothing less than excellence, especially for their children.

Thanks to our partners at Hampton Township Volunteer Fire Department for allowing us to use their station - and stop by at 4:30 today for their 1st fish fry of the season !

Yesterday, we began an exciting and important process that will impact nearly every patient we treat over the next decade — selecting new cardiac monitors to replace our aging LifePak 15s.

A little history first. In the 1980s, the Physio-Control LifePak 4 weighed 37 pounds, provided a single-lead heart rhythm, and delivered defibrillation. It cost about $4,000. (1st picture)

Today, we are evaluating two next-generation devices: the ZOLL Zenix (blue device) (13 pounds) and the Stryker LIFEPAK 35 (gray device) (16 pounds).

Yes, the weight reduction is appreciated by our crews — but what’s truly remarkable is the technology now available for our patients.

Both devices offer:
- 4-lead ECG monitoring
- 12-lead ECG acquisition & hospital transmission
- Transcutaneous pacing
- Pulse oximetry (SpO₂)
- End-tidal CO₂ monitoring (ETCO₂)
- Carboxyhemoglobin monitoring (SpCO)
- Non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP)
- Manual & AED defibrillation
- Synchronized cardioversion
- CPR feedback and quality metrics
- Data capture and integration into our patient care record
- Bluetooth/Wi-Fi hospital connectivity

The investment? Approximately $65,000 per unit × 6 units = $390,000.

Given the clinical importance and financial responsibility involved, we designed a rigorous, employee-driven evaluation process.

Yesterday, ZOLL provided in-service training and placed two Zenix monitors into service — one in Shaler and one in Hampton — where they will be used operationally for two weeks (with our current monitors remaining onboard as backup). After each use, the primary provider completes a structured online evaluation.

Stryker will follow with the exact same process for the LIFEPAK 35. Once complete, we will forward the results and our recommendation to our Board of Directors for action.

This decision is about more than equipment. It is about delivering the highest level of care to our community, being responsible stewards of public funds, and equipping our providers with the tools they need to save lives.

We are excited for what this next generation of technology means for the patients and families we serve — because when seconds matter, the right tools make all the difference.

Here is our end of year data for 2025!

THANK YOU - to the communities that we serve, to the elected and appointed leaders of our communities, to our volunteer Board of Directors who are so incredibly dedicated, and last, but most importantly, our dedicated staff of EMT's, AEMT's, and Paramedics who are second to none!

2025 was a great year!

Have you seen this picture of the guy on the left and thought wow he looks familiar?

That’s because he is none other than our own Advanced EMT Justin Karolski!

Justin has been all over social media, television, and radio since Sunday, when he caught the football from the missed Ravens field goal attempt that ended the game. And tonight, if we want to stretch the truth just a bit, it might be Justin’s fault that John Harbaugh got fired!

Justin is a full-time teacher for North Allegheny School District and we’re lucky to have him work part-time for us during weekends and the summer.

And another fun fact? The Chief at Shaler Hampton (Me!) is an avid Steelers fan and didn’t know that Justin had season tickets to the Steelers! (Hint hint!)!

Way to go Justin!!!

There was NOT a MASCAL at Eat n Park in Shaler this morning!

It’s rare that we are able to get all the on duty crews together in one place and at one time. But today being New Year’s Eve, we took a shot and we were all able to get together for breakfast - and actually eat it!

Most especially, THANK YOU to whoever was nice enough to pay our bill, what a kind and appreciated way to end 2025!!!

Here’s to a great 2026!
