Dental Visits Are Safe, Essential
During ABC’s Good Morning America (10/19) show, medical correspondent Dr. Jen Ashton responded to viewers’ coronavirus questions, including whether it is safe to receive nonemergency dental care during the pandemic. The ADA and the CDC say “dental care is considered essential health care,” noted Dr. Ashton, and “dentists have been taking extreme precautions” since even “before the coronavirus pandemic.” With this in mind, “you should not delay dental care,” said Dr. Ashton

Dental Visits Listed Among Appointments People Should Prioritize Right Now
In a consumer-focused article, U.S. News & World Report (9/9, Howley) said, “The coronavirus pandemic that took hold this past spring upended normal life for just about everyone, and for many people, that meant delaying health care appointments.” Now that more is known about the virus and how it is transmitted and access to personal protective equipment has improved, the article stated that “health care providers from across the whole health care spectrum are urging patients to reschedule appointments that may have been canceled or postponed.” With this in mind, the article said “any routine appointment that has been put off should be rescheduled as soon as possible,” and dental visits are among “appointments that might take priority.”

Dental Visits Listed Among Health Appointments People Should Consider Keeping Despite The Pandemic

The Washington Post (7/2, Searing) included dental visits in a list of “five health practices that experts say you might want to reconsider delaying” despite the coronavirus pandemic. Dental problems “early on – like very small decay in a tooth – rarely have symptoms, so people often aren’t aware they have a problem until a dentist examines their teeth, said [Dr.] Chad Gehani, president of the American Dental Association.” Hence “the recommended checkups and cleanings every three, six or 12 months, depending on the person’s oral health status, ‘to help spot dental health problems when treatment is effective and more affordable,’ he said.”
In addition, Dr. Rob Davidson, an emergency physician in West Michigan, shared in a video discussion on MSNBC (7/2) that he considers the risk of dental problems from delaying care greater than the risk of contracting the virus at the dentist.
Information for the public on what to expect as dental offices reopen may be found on ADA’s consumer website MouthHealthy.org.
