Join the Chicago Genealogical Society on November 3, 2025 from 7:00-8:30 p.m. central for our CGS Webinar via Zoom, "Fold3 Flair" with Laura Street Chaplin (CGS Member $0/Guest $10*).

Many family historians find Fold3 to be a bit intimidating. Since it’s indispensable in doing Military Records research and has so many other hidden gems to offer, why not develop some Fold3 Flair for yourself? Learning Fold3 will benefit you in countless ways!

Laura Street Chaplin, a seasoned genealogist with over 40 years of experience, has conducted extensive research while living throughout the Midwest, including Iowa, Illinois, Missouri, and Ohio. Her passion for family history began in college and evolved into a dedicated hobby, attending workshops, traveling nationwide for research, taking community college courses and lots more. Laura’s journey was propelled by her Quaker grandparents and her father, researchers who provided a head start. As a young mother she compiled a book on her mother’s family, tracing her German immigrant ancestor’s current descendants. In 2013, Laura established Willowtree Research Genealogy Services and obtained her Boston University Genealogical Research certificate, Laura leverages her wealth of knowledge and experience to assist others in discovering their family heritage, providing fulfillment and excitement along the way.

From the Illinois Writers’ Project, Curtis D. MacDougall, State Supervisor, 433 East Erie St., Chicago, IL 25 February 1941 Release 669
What it Cost to Start Farming 100 Years Ago
The cost of establishing a prairie farm in the 1840s ranged from about $300 to $500, an account prepared at that time reveals, according to the Illinois Writers’ Project, W.P.A.
The price of 160 acres at $1.25 an acre was reported to have been $200; breaking 40 of the prairie acres at $2 each came to another 480; fencing with post and rails at about $1 a hundred added $32. The cost of building a cabin ranged from $50 to $150 and stables and sheds brought the total figure to about $500. So fertile was the soil that settlers asserted that 80 acres in Illinois would yield as much as 200 acres in the East.
Production figures of an acre showed 50 to 80 bushels of Indian corn, 35 to 40 bushels of wheat, and 70 to 80 bushels of oats.
