Garden prep is coming along, slowly but surely. 👨‍🌾🧑‍🌾

Yesterday we finished reforming the garden beds and lining them with logs.

Today we added woods chips (courtesy of - thanks again guys!!) to all the walking paths.

We aren’t too concerned about the wood chips taking up too much nitrogen from the beds due to the log boarders.

Next up will be adding compost to these beds and then doing all the same to the beds on the right side of the garden.

That’s fine. We’ll do it ourselves. 🏴‍☠️

We set up our first clothesline today!

While it might not seem groundbreaking, as it’s a common practice for many, for us, it represented another stride towards self-sufficiency and harmony with nature.

Getting the blackberry and raspberry brambles ready for the upcoming season! 👩🏻‍🌾

Doing so involves several diligent steps to ensure a healthy and fruitful harvest, to include:

✅ Clearing out any remnant leaves and underbrush from the previous fall
✅ Pruning dead wood and old canes that fruited last year
✅ Cutting back remaining canes to chest height for sunlight and manageability
✅ Thinning the canes, leaving the most vigorous to reduce crowding
✅ Tying canes to a trellis system for support
✅ Enriching the soil with compost or well-rotted manure
✅ Mulching around the plants to retain moisture and suppress weeds

With the groundwork laid in early spring, the brambles will be well-set to grow vigorously and yield a bountiful crop in the summer and fall!

On any given day you can see these kids mimicking something that we’ve done outdoors, just so happens this time it was raking the grass on a late February day 😅

It’s an exciting time of year with spring on the horizon! Happy March!

Winter days exploring the property and surrounding woods. Fallen trees like this make for great firewood and the day we convert to wood to warm the home, it’ll be properly consumed, freeing up the forest floor for future growth.

Mending the compost structure in preparation for the coming spring. This one was originally constructed to contain three piles.

We’ll be building the log walls and dividers back up and adding a removable roof to allow more control on how much precipitation gets on the piles through the seasons.

Composting is an integral aspect of homesteading and our way of life here on Cello Acres and we’re excited to rejuvenate it and turn it into a four season operation this year.

Plus, outdoor projects like this keep the kids involved and engaged with the homestead and outside in nature.

Over two decades ago, before the first housing structure was built on the land we now affectionately call Cello Acres, a large potato farm thrived here. Vestiges of that era can still be found, beautifully scattered around the property, like this one here. There’s nothing quite like a fresh snowfall to capture its beauty.
