Our patients are by far the most inspiring part of this job. Every day I am humbled by the resilience of my patients and their families as they navigate the challenges of their diagnosis and treatment. One patient of mine decided to share her experience with Moyamoya disease - a rare but severe neurovascular condition associated with stroke in young patients. This disease frequently requires cerebrovascular bypass for treatment - one of the most technically challenging, yet profoundly rewarding procedures we perform in neurosurgery. This patient, and many others like her, serve a constant reminder of the ability for people to overcome seemingly insurmountable barriers. This is her story, which she wanted me to share.

There is growing evidence about the importance of first-pass reperfusion in mechanical thrombectomy for stroke patients, but little evidence on how to predict it. We tried to answer that question in this recent study from the Jefferson Neurovascular Division. We highlight the importance of process design (limiting delays to treatment) and equipment selection in improving the chances for a great outcome on the first-pass! Another great team effort with my colleagues out of Jefferson Neurovascular!

I had the privilege of judging posters last week at the Housestaff Quality Improvement and Patient Safety Poster Session and Disparities Summit. As many of you know, Quality Improvement and Patient Safety is a passion of mine, especially in neurosurgery, where the rapid advancements in the field sometimes outpace our ability to translate these developments into the clinical world.

I was blown away by so many of the amazing posters and the talented residents who put them together. We had an amazing showing from our department - 14 posters from the residents! Jefferson truly is an amazing community that is clearly dedicated to making sure that above all else, it delivers high quality patient care.

Special shoutout to Dr Hines, PGY-5 and Dr. Andrews, PGY-3 for getting honorable mentions! Their projects focused on Decreasing unnecessary radiation and cost with a novel followup CT protocol for intracranial hemorrhage, and ensuring the timely delivery of critical antiplatelet medication for patients in the ED with intracranial stents. So proud of all of their work!

We were honored to have the Neuroscience division of Jefferson New Jersey featured in this month's SJ Magazine . I have the privilege of working with such a talented group of individuals, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to discuss what we do!

We sat down with 7 healthcare providers from Jefferson Washington Twp. to talk about everything you need to know about brain and spine health.

Great paper published last month. A large, multi-center study led by Dr. Jabbour, my colleagues from Jefferson Neurosurgery, and several other leaders in the neurovascular community. Probably one of the most important papers in our field to come out of COVID. Demonstrated what we had suspected all along - Patients with COVID who present with a stroke from a large vessel occlusion tend to be younger, much harder to treat, and have worse outcomes. Phenomenal work and insight into this terrible disease, and provides even more reason to protect yourself and your family.
