The difference between Equality and Equity 🤔
Equality means treating everyone the same, giving everyone the same resources or opportunities, regardless of their starting point or needs.
Equity involves recognizing that different people have different circumstances and providing the specific resources and opportunities they need to reach an equal outcome.
Example in School:
In a classroom, if every student receives the same textbook and the same amount of time with the teacher, it assumes all students have the same learning needs—this is equality. On the other hand, if the teacher provides extra tutoring to students who struggle with reading and offers advanced materials to those who excel, this recognizes the diverse needs of students and aims to ensure everyone succeeds—this is equity.
Relation to Health:
Providing every patient with the same standard check-up, regardless of their background, location, or socioeconomic status, represents equality. This approach assumes all patients have the same needs. On the other hand, offering extra support to patients in underserved communities—such as free health screenings or mobile clinics in rural areas—addresses the specific barriers they face and ensures they receive the necessary resources to achieve the same level of health as others. This is equity.
Conclusion:
While equality means providing the same resources or opportunities to everyone, equity is about adjusting those resources to meet people where they are, ensuring fair outcomes. In both education and health, equity addresses the diverse needs of individuals and communities, leading to better overall outcomes.
