I would like to share some wonderful news. This decision has been weighing heavily on my heart for a long time. I have decided to open our doors tonight to provide temporary shelter for my Soup family members who have nowhere to go. When the temperature reaches 35 degrees, I can create a temporary shelter due to extreme weather conditions. Today, I spoke with many friends at lunch and asked where they slept last night. The answers ranged from a front porch to an abandoned house with raccoons. My 71-year-old friend slept under a tree, soaking wet and cold. After sharing my plans with them, a few cried, and the others smiled and were happy. I let them know that my accommodations were not fancy, but they would be warm and safe. Sometimes I work late afternoons and see an empty dining room. If you knew how many times I thought I have everything I need already - an empty room, heat, blankets, and pillows, food, restrooms, and community support. So here we are, doing our best for our friends in need. I want to thank all who support our daily operations and volunteer your time. Our main mission remains providing a hot, nutritious meal six days a week, 52 weeks a year. But on nights like this, I will do my best to provide a safe place during extreme weather conditions. A big thank you to Eric for volunteering his time tonight to stay and watch my Soup friends. I will return to the Soup at 7:00am to cook breakfast for them.
