Before + After: Bimalleolar Ankle Fracture [Warning: Graphic Images]
-
Dr. Garzon shares one of her most recent bimalleolar ankle fracture procedures:
“A 93-year-old female patient arrived with a significantly displaced bimalleolar ankle fracture and developed multiple fracture blisters and significant swelling. Blood thinners compounded her issues.

Typical open reduction internal fixation of the right ankle it is not recommended due to the significant amount of swelling and in large fracture blisters which can lead to infection and other complications. Therefore, another alternative are staged procedures with initial procedure consists of application of a delta frame (external fixator). This will temporarily stabilize the ankle fracture while the edema reduces as well as her skin quality improves. Once her wounds are remotely healed and swelling has reduced then she will undergo a 2nd procedure involving removal of the external fixator and performing an open reduction internal fixation of the right ankle versus percutaneous fixation depending on her skin quality.

After 2 weeks, I took her back to the operating room to remove the external fixator and performed an internal fixation of the right ankle.”

Q. Is it normal to lose feeling or sensation in your feet?
A. The short answer to this is no - in fact - losing feeling or sensation in your feet may be a warning signal that you have an underlying condition. Peripheral neuropathy, a result of damage to the nerves outside of the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves), often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in your hands and feet. If you are having loss of feeling or numbness, you should consult your podiatrist immediately.
