Glaucoma is called the “Silent Thief of Sight”. Don’t wait for symptoms of this disease because once symptoms are noticed, the damage is already done and vision loss is irreversible. In the most common form of glaucoma, there are virtually no symptoms. Vision loss begins with peripheral or side vision and may not be noticed until significant vision is lost.

Can too much screen time damage your eyes? Extended screen use won’t cause permanent damage, but it does lead to digital eye strain. Symptoms include dry eyes, headaches, blurred vision, and neck pain. We recommend the 20-20-20 rule: every 20 minutes, look at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Adjusting screen brightness, using artificial tears, and ensuring proper lighting can also help.

Many ask, "Why do I need an eye exam if my vision seems fine?" Great question. Many serious eye conditions, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration, can progress without noticeable symptoms in their early stages. Glaucoma can occur at any age, but risk factors include being over the age of 55; being of Black, Asian or Hispanic heritage; having a family history of glaucoma; and having medical conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, migraines and sickle cell anemia. Best prevention is getting regular eye exams and if you already have glaucoma, taking prescribed eye drops regularly.
