Diabetic Retinopathy occurs when blood vessels in the retina (inside back part of the eye) swell, leak or close off. Sometimes abnormal blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. The disease is usually symptomless until it causes these type of changes which affect vision and can lead to blindness. Controlling blood sugar and blood pressure are important along with regular eye exams.

Diet and Disease Prevention for the Eyes. A nutrient-rich diet does more than just protect your eyesight — it also helps guard against chronic diseases that can harm your eyes over time. Conditions like diabetes and high blood pressure can increase your risk for glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and macular degeneration. Managing your blood sugar and blood pressure through a healthy diet can go a long way in protecting your eyes.

November is Diabetes Awareness Month—a reminder that uncontrolled diabetes (type 1, type 2, or gestational) can damage your vision. It raises the risk of cataracts, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and diabetic macular edema—collectively known as diabetic eye disease, a leading cause of blindness worldwide. Annual eye exams help catch problems early.

Can nutrition contribute to good eye health? We often hear that “you are what you eat.” When it comes to eye health, that saying rings true. Just like the rest of your body, your eyes rely on a steady supply of nutrients to function at their best. While a healthy diet won’t guarantee perfect vision, it can help reduce your risk of developing certain eye conditions and support your overall visual wellness.

The Hidden Benefits of Regular Eye Exams - Comprehensive eye exams do more than update your prescription. They serve as important health screenings that can detect serious conditions before symptoms appear. Glaucoma, often called the “silent thief of sight,” typically shows no early warning signs. Diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration, and even certain brain tumors can be detected during routine eye examinations.
Your eye doctor can also spot signs of high blood pressure, diabetes, and autoimmune diseases through careful examination of your eyes. This makes regular eye care an essential part of your overall health maintenance routine.
