Finally having a chance to sit down and think about my last few days in the office (which happened a few weeks ago already now). How blessed to have a career and “work” that is so very hard to say see you later to. I know all my little speech friends moving on to Kindergarten are ready for the challenge and I know that my pre-K headed littles will thrive and adapt well under the changes ahead but man it’s hard to say goodbye for now.

Happy Saint Patrick’s Day! Hope the leprechauns brought you more luck than tricks!

We’ve had a ton of fun the past week making Gold Hunt games for home carryover! Check out your kiddos notebooks for a fun activity for the whole family this weekend 🙂!

When your pediatrician claims you should “wait and see” before giving you a referral to have your child evaluated by a licensed therapist (speech, occupational, physical) please kindly remind them that there were no Speech Therapists, Occupational therapists or Physical therapists in the room where these heinous updates developmental milestones were created.

I hope everyone had a wonderful and restful holiday week and week off from therapy services! This week we’re slowly getting back on track and back into the routine!

I know some families need to schedule some make ups and rearrange things due to quarantines and I plan to have the virtual schedule book back up and ready for you to do such by later this afternoon! Teletherapy is also an option for anyone who is feeling under the weather and/or quarantining and can also be used during inclement weather (I probably won’t utilize that option for full, classic snow days where we’re all stuck at home all day—unless we end up inundated with snow days but it’s a great option for days when delays throw off your schedule or for those weird flash snow spurts that make us nervous to venture out in).

Stay well friends! I’m excited to hear all about your fun holidays!

5 years ago I had the most amazing idea (and Ive posted this same sentiment every December ever since)! Setting this tree up takes longer than it should but I can’t help but look at the fronts and backs of each tag to discover which little speechie friend over the years made which ornament. I find myself smiling and sending text messages to parents and guardians I haven’t spoken to in years to send holiday wishes and speak of fond memories of the times spent with their child in speech therapy in years past.

Idk if they make a tree big enough for the one I might need by the time my career is ending but I will never not do this project every year regardless of setting or population I’m working in!

"Chrysanthemum" by Kevin Henkes

Here are some of the pull out vocabulary and words from our book last week. Try to incorporate these words into your interactions with your child this week--Do they understand what they mean? Do they understand the varied tenses or plural forms of these words? Additionally, each child will have their own articulation sounds they are working on, but these words should cover a wide variety of speech sounds and phonological processes so they are an additional resource/word list that you could utilize when working on your child's articulation homework.

“Chrysanthemum” has some really great use of language to teach personification and help young language learners see how special and powerful language can be in describing how we feel or act. Try using some more colorful language to describe your feelings or actions this week at home and I hope the return to summer heat tomorrow doesn’t leave anyone feeling WILTED. 😉🙃

Oh my! How in the world are we already on week 3 of the school year?! It’s been a rough start with schedule changes and school closures and all the normal chaos of getting into a new routine for a new school year BUT we’re off and running and already having plenty of fun!

Last week we read “Chrysanthemum” by Kevin Henkes and talked about our names and what makes them special. We also talked about how to be a nice friend and what types of things might hurt our friends feelings.

Many of my speech friends made these adorable little Chrysanthemum pictures with her exclaiming that their name is perfect!

And of course first full(ish) week of the school year demands the most favorite activity of all…opening eggs to discover which animal friends were hiding inside!

Why cancel when you can reschedule?! The virtual schedule book is up and open for September. Please use the provided link and password (text me if you need a reminder) to see my upcoming availability and schedule make up sessions as needed.

*reminder* If your child's session falls on a school holiday/no school day, you can ALWAYS reschedule that session for another day that week so that he/she doesn't miss out on sessions.

Once again I will be using composition notebooks as our homework and communication logs and I ask that families provide a notebook for this purpose if possible. I will set up notebooks over the first week or so of services and then they will go back and forth between sessions ✏️

Current speech families: keep your eyes out for emails or other correspondence tomorrow as I’ll be sending updated policy and procedure documents as well as the new school year forms. I will also be putting the first month of school into the virtual schedule book so be prepared for a bunch of redundant seeming emails as each session will generate its own confirmation emails in order to have it sync with your Google or other virtual calendar apps.
