Kelsey Thomas, Executive Assistant at CHH, planted our pinwheel garden in support of CAPS Child Abuse Prevention Month. We planted our garden underneath Ned Kauffman’s tree, a subtle nod to his work with students in planting trees in the Goshen School district.

We are proud to support the important programs and work CAPS provides for a stronger, healthier community.

When we moved into the building at 400 West Lincoln Avenue in 2021 we noticed a tiny nub-tailed black squirrel scurrying around the property every day. It was apparent our home was her home. We watched her bury nutty little treasures (no, we’re not telling you where), jump from branch to branch, not back down from bigger squirrels, and dodge vehicles in the parking lot. She's Scrappy! we thought, and thus, her name was given.

This morning Scrappy hopped in through the back door inquiring about an annual check up. “Are you insured, we asked?” "Squeakums squeak squeaker," she replied. Good thing our volunteer squirrel interpreter, Chip Munk, was serving the clinic today. Chip let us know that Scrappy is indeed uninsured. After further conversation we were also able to qualify her for the Indiana Breast and Cervical Cancer Program (IN-BCCP).

IN-BCCP provides free or low-cost screenings for females who are Indiana residents, aged 30–64 (or 65+ without Medicare Part B), uninsured or underinsured, and have a household income at or below 200% of the federal poverty level.

Volunteer Women’s Health provider Nancy Liechty Loewen happened to be here today and had an opening, so we went ahead and got Scrappy on the schedule. While it's not typically possible to be seen the same day, we will offer it when we can.

"Squeakit, squeak squeaker, squeeeee" said Scrappy as she departed. “She said thank you, that she feels confident to go out and find bigger and better acorns now, and that she appreciates the work you do,” said Chip.

We appreciate you too, Scrappy, and we'll see you tomorrow at the free tiny squirrel pantry!

Last month local artist Francisco Avila presented the Voices in Colors for Social Justice exhibit at Center for Healing & Hope. Despite a heavy winter storm, many people showed up to learn more about his work and heritage.

Francisco shared:
"I have seen, in Venezuela and across the world, people fighting for basic needs, for freedom, for dignity, for the simple right to be respected for their faith, their origins, their race.

I have seen how injustice, how the ego of authoritarian regimes, and how war pushes human beings to flee their own land. Some of them, my own family.

That pain, that loss, that courage moved me to raise my voice through art. That is how my series 'Voices in Colors for Social Justice' was born in 2010."

The art will be coming down today. The collaboration helped us imagine future partnerships of this kind. It has been an honor to partner with Francisco to bring his artwork to our patients, clients, and community.

We met Erika Martinez when she began volunteering with Center for Healing & Hope's Natural Helpers program. She saw an opportunity. Encouraged by her own lived experiences, she took on the challenge of forming her own organization - Autismo con Amor

Autismo Con Amor is a group of parents helping parents. It connects Spanish-speaking parents of children with autism with other parents through WhatsApp and in-person community support groups to share challenges, express frustrations, ask questions, and navigate the healthcare system together.

Autismo Con Amor utilizes the Office of Solidarity with Immigrants at Prairie Street Mennonite Church to connect with families.
More on that partnership here:https://chhclinics.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/10/August-2025-SOH.pdf

Erika recently had the opportunity to share information about her program with the English as a Second Language (ESL) class at PSMC.

We love seeing this type of organic outreach through these partnerships. Neighbors building communities for one another. Natural Helpers branching out to create the support systems they see an opportunity for.

Pictured with Erika is Greg Suderman, who volunteers his time to let people into the church for ESL classes.
