We reach goals by practicing.

It could be strength, flexibility, mindset, habits…

Pain goals can be challenging. To reach pain goals, we practice building curiosity and safety in movement.

What goals are you working towards? How’s it going?

Patient feedback! We had an amazing conversation about the pelvic floor while we worked to get it to relax.

That was an efficient appointment! Phew, I agree!

I’ve had more than one patient bring this up in the past few weeks!

No, your pelvic floor “should” not need to voluntarily contract (and release) that fast in order to be called healthy.

I’d suggest that a healthy pelvic floor is one that is symptom free without you thinking about it at all.

Another myth is that kegels are the answer to incontinence, but there is so much more involved. More often than not, we are training the pelvic floor to lengthen and the body how to manage its pressure systems.

So, if you are leaking urine at all, even a few drops, see a pelvic floor PT. You might be surprised what you learn!

Our bodies respond to our habits and can create bladder urgency, even to the point of incontinence!

However the best thing about brains is that they are never done learning.

We are able to retrain brains to give us normal signs of urgency again.

If you don’t have an overactive urgency system, drink your water, go p*e when you get the urge, stop p*eing just in case, and stay regular.

If your bladder is overactive, see a pelvic floor PT because we treat that!

It is a normal way for the abdomen to stretch to allow us to grow bigger babies!

It is also normal for it to go back to normal with no interventions after 3 months postpartum!

But when it doesn’t, that still does not mean you are doing something wrong! Sometimes the brain doesn’t get the memo that the belly doesn’t need that extra room anymore.

Another little known fyi: it comes back together with bodywork techniques that tell the brain exactly that…. That it doesn’t need that adaptation anymore!

Sometimes abdominal exercises that are commonly marketed for fixing diastasis recti exchange that same message and that’s why they can work too!

I also like giving those same exercises, but the reasoning is different. And this matters! Because it’s time that we stop blaming our moms for a normal function of the pregnant and postpartum body!It is a normal way for the abdomen to stretch to allow us to grow bigger babies!

These strategies range from common recommendations to fixes that seem to follow common sense if we consider the pelvic floor to be a muscle that is weak or tight.

However, they are all - in fact - impossible.

Which leaves many people feeling like failures or wondering “what’s wrong with me and my body.”

Don’t give these kinds of strategies your time or energy.

Instead, see an expert in the field!
