YES!!!!🙌
So many people with chronic health issues blame family history of disease on their current situation:
"weight issues run in my family...."
"my mom and aunt both had breast cancer..."
"dementia runs in my family... "
OUR GENES ARE NOT OUR DESTINY!
Yes, having a family history of disease, or a genetic predisposition to say, gain weight, is relevant (and important), but it's not the whole story.
Our genome (our DNA) is like the hardware of a computer; it's fixed and is there to facilitate the doing of the work. The EPIGENOME is the software that tells the computer what to do - and the code on that software is editable!
Epigenome basically means "above genetics". Epigenetics is the study of the things that turn ON and turn OFF gene expression.
So just because you have a gene, does not mean that gene is being expressed. AND, how you live, what you eat, your life experiences, your exposure to chemicals, stress, etc can influence whether those genes get expressed or not.
This is the heart of the NATURE vs NURTURE argument; it's not one or the other, it's BOTH.
NATURE = Your DNA - your inherited genes
NURTURE = Your malleable, changeable epigenome.
Want to turn OFF gene expression for cancer, diabetes, heart disease, etc?
🤟🏼 Eat whole foods
🤟🏼 Get exercise
🤟🏼 Sleep!
🤟🏼 AVOID CHEMICAL EXPOSURES
🤟🏼 Do fun stuff
🤟🏼 Heal emotional trauma
While it's not a guarantee that disease won't strike, these changes better stack the odds in your favor.
Teaching your clients or patients that they can literally change the expression of their genes by dialing DOWN unhealthy habits, and dialing UP healthy ones is super empowering!
