“Mom’s coming home tomorrow!”
Karen was relieved. Three weeks in the hospital, two weeks in rehab. Finally, her mom would be in her own bed again.
But the next night, reality hit.
Her mom needed help getting up every few hours. She couldn’t remember which pills to take when. She kept trying to do things herself, make coffee, get the mail, things that were suddenly dangerous.
Karen took a week off work. Then another. She was sleeping four hours a night, running on coffee and anxiety.
By week three, she called us.
“I thought I could handle this,” she said. “I didn’t realize she’d need someone awake all night.”
Most families don’t. The discharge planning focuses on medical needs, not the reality of round-the-clock supervision.
