When Congress passed the Omnibus Reconciliation Act of 1980, it expanded home health services.

Most individuals on Medicare would benefit from a Medicare supplement plan, also known as Medigap.

The reason is a Medigap plan covers the “gaps” in original Medicare coverage. In other words, a Medicare supplement plan will step in to cover expenses that are not covered by Medicare alone.

All Medigap plans are standardized, and therefore, completely or partly cover the Medicare Part B coinsurance or copayment.

Plans K and L cover 50% and 75%, respectively, while the other plans cover 100% of the coinsurance or copayment.

Medicare supplement plans cover many additional expenses that are not covered by Medicare, however, there are some limitations.

Generally, Medigap doesn’t cover long-term care (like care in a nursing home), vision or dental care, hearing aids, eyeglasses, or private-duty nursing.

Medigap sold to people who are new to Medicare aren’t allowed to cover the Part B deductible.

Due to this, Plans C and F aren’t available to people who were newly eligible for Medicare as of January 1, 2020.

If you already have or were covered by Plan C or F (or the Plan F high deductible version) before January 1, 2020, you can keep your plan.
