Have you ever been hit in the nose with a baseball or other trauma? If you have you might have a deviated nasal septum. Some of the symptoms are stuffy nose, poor air flow through one nostril, and reoccurring sinus infections. Below is a picture of septal tissue that was removed from a patient with a severe devotion!!

What is Sinusitis?

When you have acute or chronic sinusitis, the mucous membranes of your nose, sinuses and throat become inflamed, possibly from a pre-existing cold or allergies. Swelling obstructs the sinus openings and prevents normal mucus drainage, causing mucus and pressure to build up. Symptoms include: drainage of a thick, yellow or greenish discharge from the nose or down the back of the throat; nasal obstruction or congestion; tenderness and swelling around the eyes, cheeks, nose and forehead; and/or a reduced sense of smell and taste. What is a Deviated Nasal Septum?

A deviated septum involves a displacement of the septum, the wall that separates the nostrils, to one side of the nose.

This condition makes one nasal passage smaller than the other, which can affect breathing if the displacement is great enough.

Patients with a severe deviated septum may experience nasal congestion, nosebleeds and frequent or recurring sinus infections because of their uneven nasal passages.

Balloon Sinuplasty is a minimally invasive, breakthrough technology used by Dr. Ulrich to treat recurrent acute sinusitis patients, or chronic sinusitis patients, who have sinusitis symptoms that have not responded to sinus medications and therapies. Studies following chronic sinusitis patients report durable results lasting up to two years after the procedure.

Balloon Sinuplasty can be performed right in our office under local anesthesia. Dr. Ulrich begins by inserting a small, flexible balloon catheter into the nose to reach the inflamed sinus.
