Often called the “golden hour,” this is when babies are wide awake, parents are fully present, and bonding hormones are at their peak. Skin-to-skin and quiet connection in these first minutes support:

Pain relief in labor doesn’t always come from medication.

Hands-on comfort measures like counter pressure, movement, and massage are evidence-based tools that doulas bring to every birth space.

They don’t replace medical care, but they expand the options families have for support, choice, and comfort. 🌸

Here you’ll see the Double Hip Squeeze - performed by a partner, family, member, or doula - while they breathe through a contraction. This steady, firm pressure can make a real difference.

💡 Tip: Ask your doula to show you the proper technique before labor so you both feel confident when the moment comes.

I had the privilege of teaching these techniques to bedside nurses at McLaren Flint in 2019 and it was such a special experience!

In the hospital, it can feel like your baby is “over there” in the bassinet while you’re “over here” in bed. Baby still senses your presence, and this is a beautiful time for your partner to walk over and spend some quality time with your newborn 🤍

Reaching out to touch your baby - stroking their feet, holding their hand - helps regulate their body and lets them know they are cherished already. 💓

Research shows that parental touch can calm newborn stress and even support more stable vital signs. These small acts of connection remind families that their hands are powerful tools for comfort and healing. 🌿

Doulas support parents in claiming these moments, even in busy hospital environments. 👩🏽‍🍼

My family goes here for our chiropractic care and I love that Dr. Walsh is married to one of my former midwives so he *gets it* when it comes to adjustments tailored to pregnancy AND gentle adjustments for babies to help with tension, breastfeeding latches, and overall wellness.

“THIS is why you buckle your kids into their car seats correctly every SINGLE time. Even when they scream because the straps are tight. Even when they complain about the chest clip or being rear facing. We stopped for milk on the way home from preschool yesterday. We were minutes from home. Someone sped through a red light and slammed into us.

You never think it will happen to you. My boys escaped without a scratch but the paramedics told me it could have been very different had I not taken the extra 2 minutes to be sure they were buckled correctly. I will be fine, my kids are fine, everything else can be replaced. Sending thanks to God for keeping us safe (along with Honda, Graco & Chicco).” - via Jenna Casado Rabberman & Sheriff Bieber
