“As a 12-year-old, I could pitch like a pro. I might still have an arm that can throw!” That’s Lavon at Edgewood Spring Creek Ustick and while her baseball days may have slowed, her energy hasn’t! She’s full of creativity and fun, diving into every puzzle and diamond-art project she can find.

Lavon spent her career as the legendary lunch lady at Meridian School District — think cinnamon rolls! A recipe we’re still hoping she’ll share with our community someday. Beyond her culinary skills, Lavon brightens every day, supporting residents and staff, making people feel welcome, and spreading smiles (and food) wherever she goes.

“I’ve finally found my home and it’s nothing what people used to think!” At Edgewood, people like Lavon get to bring their passions, into their retirement years. Because we are Edgewood.

Our cheerful Georgia, at Edgewood Spring Creek Eagle Island has enjoyed the freedom to age gracefully here for years. She first joined us in one of our independent patio homes, where she and her little dog, Denzel, loved spending time in the backyard and taking short neighborhood walks.

As the years passed, it was easy for Georgia to transition into one of our assisted living apartments. She didn’t have to leave the community she loves. No major changes, no starting over. Just the same familiar faces, the same neighborhood vibes, and the same open-door friendliness she’s always shared. Georgia always makes a point to greet residents, share joy, listen to their stories, and create lasting friendships.

We are a community full of incredible people like Georgia; embracing life and showing that age doesn’t define you.

Roy has traveled far and wide; through Mexico, Canada, and even on a few youthful runaway adventures. Eventually, he found his greatest destination: his wife, Fay, in Colstrip, Montana. “She’s the best thing to ever happen to me.” Together, they built a life rooted in love and purpose, Roy helping construct the local powerplants while Fay taught school.

Years later, when Roy’s dementia diagnosis meant he needed a different level of care, he toured several communities in Billings. But none felt quite right… too big, too showy, too impersonal. He then walked through the doors at Edgewood Memory Care Billings. From his very first meal and the friendly faces, he knew: this was home. He even met a resident and discovered they share the same set of best friends — talk about a small world moment!

Our close-knit, welcoming community allows Roy to feel comfortable, be himself, and enjoy the things he loves most; like soaking up the morning sun in the courtyard, laughing with friends, woodworking, building lighted pictures, cooking, tinkering, and joining our Maintenance Tech, Tom, on little adventures outside the community.

Because at Edgewood, no matter your needs, your story continues here, surrounded by people who want you to thrive. We are Edgewood.

“It started as a winter stay and moving back home in the summer, to Mott ND, you know, just to escape those frosty North Dakota temps and get a sneak peek at community life.”

From globe-trotting adventures to cozy winter days, Geno’s traveled cross-country, trekked through Alaska’s Iditarod, and has a story (or five!) for every corner of the world!

And what Geno from Edgewood Hawks Point found was her favorite destination was much closer than she imagined. “The people around Hawk’s Point make this a home for me.” Now, Geno lives as a full-time resident and lights up our days with her own poems, life lessons, and maybe even a few stories that make you laugh until you cry.

Edgewood is filled with some of the coolest world travelers. We are Edgewood.

“Take that meningitis!” Words that our dear friend Marilyn said as a junior in high school. As part of her near-death experience, Marilyn contracted meningitis, slipped into a three-day coma, and later spent weeks in quarantine. She’s leaned on faith and gratitude ever since, calling the survival one of her happiest blessings! That experience sparked a lifetime of faith-led leadership and service to others.

Now a resident at Edgewood Watertown - Senior Living Marilyn brings the impact of teaching into our community with over 60 years of experience. Teachers have this lifelong gift of shaping lives and that doesn’t stop when they retire. Once the one who shaped young minds, now inspires her neighbors with her grace, humor, and lifelong love of learning. She’s still mastering “the art of not showing my reaction when someone says something funny, inappropriate, or just plain silly!” (We’re all still working on that one, Marilyn.)

“Have faith in God and follow Him.” Our conversations with Marilyn tend to turn into lessons, laughter becomes shared wisdom, and before we know it we find ourselves learning something new again.

Marilyn has spent her life pouring love and faith into others, volunteering through her church and community. Her love story with her husband, Ron, began on a blind date, and together they raised four college-educated children, filling their summers with camping trips, baking, and watching their family tree grow to include grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Around here, our teachers never really stop teaching. We are Edgewood.

“Initial conversations were tough, but once we saw the activities come to life, it was an easy sell!” At Edgewood Grand Forks “they go out of their way; they are persistent, for residents to participate in activities or utilize the added amenities.”

LeRoy has embraced moving! He has opened his apartment up for friends and neighbors to watch hockey games. He’s always joining in group gatherings in the Pub, or socializing over a cup of coffee, a sweet treat or signing up wild adventures with others! “During the “Kicking off Summer” party, Leroy was the investigator, where everyone had a blast with water guns; I don’t think anyone left that event dry!”

Ten months ago, Leroy was getting ready to transition to Edgewood. Life transitions are hard but when you have the right people in place you can feel a little joy in the change. Staff stepped in to help my father-in-law, Leroy: from hospital visits for initial intake, to coordinating move-in details, to sorting through financials. “It’s like it was all handled before we even needed to think about it.”

Edgewood Grand Forks is powered by people who care. It’s the prompt responses, the exceptional knowledge, communicating changes, and bringing concerns to our attention. “Leroy has built trust with these individuals. They call my father-in-law by his first name, they know what he did all day, they are just so engaged.” Walking the halls you’ll be met with a magnitude of staff from various departments. And each one... will greet us by our names. Isn’t that so cool?

While LeRoy’s original home will always be his home, It’s the residents and staff that make up our community that create a different sense of “home.” We are Edgewood.

“I jumped off, literally, jumped off the train when it slowed down at the Missouri River.” Forrest “Stan” Sharkey is a legendary storyteller at Edgewood on Dominion. Stan moved from Indianapolis by train, to Bismarck, where he then lived under a bridge. At 15, he found work as an elevator operator at the Patterson Hotel. “For $1/day, I took guests up the elevator, to not only direct them to their rooms, but meet ladies for the evening.” He began a new life in Bismarck, compiling enough stories to fill a history book!

As a teen, Stan served our Country and fought the front lines of five different south pacific islands during WWII. He was then selected to attend language school in Maui, where he mastered the Japanese language. Climbing the ranks to Sergeant in Army Intelligence, Stan’s job was to chat with captured Japanese soldiers and gather vital information. When the war ended, Stan struck up a friendship with a Japanese Major, and together they helped keep Japanese citizens working during peace talks. Because of Stan’s fluent dual language, he was offered a wild job offer: a position with the Major’s family business, comprised of 7 major corporations, offering $1,500/month including a house, car, and two servants! Stan laughs now but without a doubt still insists, “if the Army had let me, I would’ve stayed in Japan!”

His journey led him to the humorous resident he is today. He’s sharper than a tac, witty, always dressed to impress, and his stories are filled with such detail that you feel like you were part of it. He’s like a book, you just don’t want to put down!

It’s people like Stan that make Edgewood a place where you can find stories worth hearing and people worth knowing. We are Edgewood.
