What happens when a future provider experiences a different approach to spinal care for the first time?
During a full-spine session, moving from lumbar to thoracic to cervical, a Palmer graduate student experienced flexion distraction and Y-axis techniques with Dr. Michael Johnson in a way that challenged their expectations.
Instead of force, the focus was on controlled movement and decompression.
Instead of quick adjustments, the experience emphasized positioning, motion, and precision.
The result?
✅ A noticeable sense of decompression through the lower back
✅ Improved mobility and rotation,
✅ Relief in areas the patient didn’t even realize needed attention, especially through the cervical spine
For someone early in their clinical journey, the takeaway was clear:
Not every patient responds best to high-velocity approaches.
Sometimes, a more controlled, decompression-based method can create a completely different experience.
And for providers, that opens the door to treating a wider range of patients with more flexibility, more precision, and more intention.
