At the Council on Alcoholism and Addictions in Grand Island

WHO SHOULD KNOW MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID?
Parents, and all other adults who work with youth including teachers, counselors, coaches, youth group leaders, scout leaders, juvenile services, juvenile probation, human services.

YOUTH MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID is designed to teach parents, family members, caregivers, teachers, school staff, peers, neighbors, health and human services workers, and other caring citizens how to help an adolescent (age 12-18) who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people. The course introduces common mental health challenges for youth, reviews typical adolescent development, and teaches a 5-step action plan for how to help young people in both crisis and non-crisis situations. Topics covered include anxiety, depression, substance use, disorders in which psychosis may occur, disruptive behavior disorders (including ADHD), and eating disorders.

WHAT IT COVERS:
Recognize common signs and symptoms of mental health challenges, including anxiety, depression, eating disorders and attention deficit hyperactive disorder
Recognize common signs and symptoms of substance use challenges
Understand how to interact with a young person in crisis
Know how to connect a young person with help
Better understand trauma, substance use, self-care and the impact of social media and bullying

Your Trainer: Journey Noyes is the Coordinator for the Prevention Project Coalition in Grand Island. She recently graduated from the University of Nebraska at Kearney with a Bachelors in Sociology, emphasizing in Women's & Gender Studies and Behavioral & Mental Health. Currently she is completing a Master's Program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling with a goal of becoming a S*x Therapist. She is passionate about educating the community on why mental health matters and how we can support one another.

Kids Power! Is a free 8-week educational series for children ages 7-11 who are affected by a loved one’s addiction. This program is designed to help children
• Understand that they are not alone
• Learn about addiction in an age-appropriate way
• Explore and express feelings in a safe and supportive environment
• Learn a variety of problem-solving, coping, and self-care strategies
• Build self-esteem, self-worth, and positive feelings about themselves
• Simply be kids by learning to have fun in safe and healthy ways
This series will begin Monday, January 5, 2026 and meet on Monday evenings from 5:30 to 7:30pm (through February 23rd).
