Paul Nelson, founder of the Oral Health Task Force (OHTF), is one of seven recipients of the 2025 Virginia McKnight Binger Heart of Community Honor. The Heart of Community Honor has recognized 333 Minnesotans since 1995 and celebrates people are the pulse of Minnesota's caring and connected communities. Each recipient receives a $10,000 cash award, which Paul generously donated directly to the OHTF!

Since 2013, the OHTF has worked in collaboration with Grand Marais Family Dentistry and regional grantors to ensure no child misses out on important dental services. As a result, Cook County now has the lowest rate of children's cavities in the state. What started as a program aimed at school-aged children has grown to include pregnant patients, young adults up to 26 years, and those aged 65+. In addition, a new initiative has expanded dental services for members of the Grand Portage Band. Congratulations to Paul! We are so grateful for his commitment to improving dental care in Cook County.

The Healthy Homes Program brings low-cost, high-impact improvements that support safety, accessibility, and healthier living conditions for residents across our rural communities.

We aim to reach 40 homes by 2026—and we still have 12 open slots for households interested in a free home assessment and support.

If you’ve been thinking about making your home safer or healthier, now is the time! ....contact us to get started.

The most common concerns we’re addressing include:
Mold and moisture
Poor indoor air quality
Tripping hazards
Plumbing issues
Lack of ventilation and sanitation
Excess cold and poor heat retention
Old insulation and windows
Lack of handrails, poor lighting, and other fall hazards

We also assess homes through an aging-in-place lens, focusing on:
Accessibility needs
Fall prevention
Temperature control
Clean air and safe water
Home safety upgrades
Weatherization supplies

Resources available through the program:
Cook County Healthy Homes funds for eligible home repairs
Free radon testing kits
Free well water testing for qualifying households

During each home visit, we also provide a brief educational session on emergency preparedness, sharing:
Local preparedness resources
Information on wildfire smoke, power outage safety, and Code Red alerts
Tools for resilient aging in rural areas
