Resentment is a 50lb backpack you don’t need to wear.

So many default parents carry an invisible load—planning, anticipating, remembering, soothing, managing. And when it feels like our partner isn’t carrying the same weight, resentment can build fast.

The feeling is real and completely valid, but holding onto it only adds pressure to YOU.

CBT teaches us to notice the thoughts that make the backpack heavier:

“I’m alone in this.”

“It shouldn’t be this unequal.”

“If I don’t do it, no one will.”

Instead of carrying that weight all day, try setting it down: name the thought, gently challenge it, and ask clearly for what you need.

You deserve to move through motherhood without 50 extra pounds on your back. đź’›

One of the simplest (and most powerful) CBT mindset shifts for new parents is reframing daily tasks.
Not toxic positivity. Not pretending it’s easy.
Just gently adjusting the lens.

Because postpartum life is FULL of moments that feel like obligations… but many of them are also opportunities for connection, grounding, or meaning.

đź’ Example:
“Oh no… I have to do bath time.”
⬇️
“Okay… I get to do bath time.”
A chance to slow down, splash together, smell his shampoo, watch him discover warm water like it’s magic.

đź’ Another:
“I have to get up again tonight.”
⬇️
“I get to be the one he reaches for in the dark.”

This shift doesn’t erase the exhaustion, it just gives your brain a new path to walk down. One more focussed on gratitude.

Why it works:
CBT teaches that our thoughts influence our emotions and behaviors. When we soften a thought, we often soften the emotional load that comes with it. Small reframes = big relief over time.

Try it this week:
Choose one “have to” moment each day and practice the reframe. Not perfectly. Not every time. Just when you remember!

Your future self will feel the difference.
And you deserve that.

Today, on National First Responders Day, we honor the courage and commitment of those who show up for others every single day—nurses, physicians, EMTs, firefighters, and law enforcement. 💙

At Lake Michigan Counseling Services, we recognize the emotional and physical toll this work can take. Our clinicians are here to hold space for the trauma, compassion fatigue, and sacrifices that come with serving on the front lines.

You care for everyone else, let us care for you.

Postpartum peace starts with boundaries. 💛 Saying “no” is an act of protection for your healing, your baby, and your mental health. The right people will understand; the rest can wait.

Get comfortable not caring about others opinions. You and your baby come first - always.

The Parenting Pause đź’›

Something I find important to encourage all new parents to do: choose one night a week each to be completely off-duty. No baby duties, no chores — just time to rest, recharge, or remember who you are outside of parenting.

Knowing that break is coming can make even the hardest weeks feel lighter. Research shows that regular partner support and personal time reduce postpartum stress and strengthen relationships (Leahy-Warren et al., 2020; Bina & Harrington, 2023).

It’s not selfish — it’s how you refill your cup so you can pour love back into your family.

World Mental Health Day

Today, we pause to honor the courage it takes to seek help, to heal, and to hold space for one another. At Lake Michigan Counseling Services, we are deeply honored to do the work we do—to walk alongside our clients through the valleys and toward the light of hope and wholeness.

Every conversation, every breakthrough, every small step forward matters. Mental health care saves lives, and we are proud to be part of that vital, life-giving work each and every day.

Let’s continue breaking the stigma, supporting one another, and remembering: no one has to walk this journey alone.
