Pregnancy is often described as a season of joy and excitement…but for some women, it doesn’t feel that way at all.

Maybe you feel more overwhelmed than you expected.
Maybe you don’t quite feel like “yourself.”
Maybe the emotions feel heavier, louder, or more confusing than you imagined.

On the blog today, I’m sharing the real difference between typical pregnancy symptoms and the signs that something deeper (like anxiety or depression in pregnancy) might be showing up.

If pregnancy feels harder than you thought it would, this post is for you.

For moms of young kids here’s a new book Recommendation: Mommy Love by Mama Sōma (full disclosure it’s a children’s book!)

There’s something about slowing down and being fully present in motherhood, not rushing to the next milestone or the next nap, but really seeing the small moments that make up our days.

Mommy Love beautifully captures that spirit. It’s a children’s book about mindfulness, connection, and the love between a mother and child. Whether you’re reading it with your little one at bedtime or giving it as a gift to a new mom, it’s a sweet reminder that love is found in presence and not perfection 💛

If you’ve been looking for a way to slow down and savor the heart of motherhood, Mommy Love is a wonderful place to start.

New Training Opportunity for SAU Alumni & Students

I’m so excited to partner with Spring Arbor University to offer a 90-minute virtual training on a topic that’s often misunderstood — Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD).

OCD is one of the most misunderstood mental health conditions. Many people spend years in treatment before anyone names it. This training takes a practical, case-based approach to help you recognize OCD in your clients, understand how it masquerades as anxiety, and feel confident knowing what to do next. This training is designed for both clinical and non-clinical helping professionals. Therapists will gain tools to differentiate OCD from anxiety and strengthen assessment skills, while non-clinical social workers will learn practical ways to recognize OCD symptoms and support clients in getting the right care.

📅 Date: Monday 11/10/25
🕐 Time: 11:30am-1pm
💻 Location: Virtual
👥 Who can attend: Open to current SAU students and alumni only

SAU students and alumni can register using the link emailed by the university.

So grateful to be back with the Thriving Motherhood group at Crossroads Bible Church this morning to talk about perinatal anxiety and depression. It’s always an honor to help moms feel seen, supported, and reminded that they’re not alone.

One of the most common things I hear from women in therapy is, “I don’t want to be a burden.”

Here’s what I tell them…

Everyone needs help sometimes.
The people who love you want to care for you.
Letting others in is how real connection grows.

This week on the blog, I’m sharing a personal story about what caring for my sick one-year-old taught me about this fear of “being a burden.” It’s a reminder that being cared for is part of being loved.

In counseling sessions, we often hear women say, “I don’t want to be a burden.”
They hold it all together on the outside while quietly struggling inside…afraid to need too much, ask too much, or take up too much space.

A few weeks ago, when my one-year-old son was sick, I learned something about being a “burden” that changed how I think about this fear - and maybe it’ll change how you think about it too.

What a beautiful night with the Thriving Motherhood group at Crossroads Bible Church sharing about PMADs. Grateful for the chance to sit with moms who are navigating the joyful and challenging aspects of motherhood. It is powerful to be reminded that we’re not alone. Can’t wait to be back next week with the Thursday morning group!

As OCD Awareness Week wraps up, I want to leave you with this:
Healing from OCD doesn’t mean the thoughts disappear it just means they no longer control you.

Recovery looks like…
✨ Having an intrusive thought and not needing to figure it out.
✨ Feeling the urge to check, confess, or pray and choosing to sit with the uncertainty instead.
✨ Doing the things you used to avoid.
✨ Laughing again, showing up again, living again.

OCD recovery isn’t about “thinking positive” or “stopping the thoughts.”
It’s about learning that you can live fully and freely even when you experience doubt.

If you’ve been struggling with OCD, know this: healing is absolutely possible, and you are not alone.

People with OCD often get trapped in relentless loops of “what if?” thoughts that feel impossible to turn off:

What if I didn’t wash my hands well enough and someone gets sick?
What if I offended God without meaning to?
What if there’s something “dirty” on me I can’t get off?
What if I hit someone with my car and didn’t notice?
What if I secretly want to hurt someone I love?
What if I had a “bad” sexual thought — does that mean something’s wrong with me?
What if I didn’t pray the “right” way and something bad happens?
What if I said something offensive and can’t remember?
What if I didn’t lock the door… and something terrible happens?
What if this means I’m a bad person?

OCD isn’t about being “too anxious” or “too careful.” It’s about living with relentless uncertainty that feels unbearable.

But here’s the good news. OCD is treatable (with the right kind of help).
