Sea Smoke

Gateway to Winter

The sea smoke was incredibly dense Monday morning. The phenomenon is caused by evaporative cooling -- the cold air temperature and warmer open water of Lake Superior create this beautiful type of winter fog.

This long exposure photograph gives the sea smoke a ghostly appearance as it glides through the Aerial Lift Bridge from the Duluth Harbor. Duluth winters provide dramatic, striking scenery!

Pop !

“Pop Goes the Weazel” Photo by Mike Crowley

I usually don’t post back to back photos of anything, but this is an exception because everyone seemed to really enjoy the photo of the ermine as much as I did taking it.
I watched this little bu**er for almost half an hour as it kept diving in the snow, and then reappearing in a different spot. It was really something to watch, and something I won't soon forget. I could not resist naming the photo “Pop Goes the Weazel”.

Ermine

Ermines are a member of the weasel family, and they are another animal that changes color in the winter to all white, except for a black tip on their tail. They are so well hidden in the snow they are almost impossible to see. And in the spring they will turn brown so they are camouflaged for the summer. Trying to take a photo of one of these little speed demons is almost impossible, just when you are ready to take a photo they disappear out of sight. I have even taken photos where I swear I got a photo of one, but when I looked at the photos I have taken, there is no ermine in the photo. I really enjoyed playing cat and mouse with this ermine, and now that I know where it lives, I will be photographing it again soon.

“Stormy Weather” Photo by Mike Crowley

Whenever it snows in the Northwoods of Wisconsin the deer don’t move around much, so if I want to see the deer and photograph them I have to walk in the forest that surrounds our land and see if I can spot them hiding out. I take a four mile walk each and every day in the winter no matter the weather, and I can usually find Blue Eyes and her fawn hiding somewhere in the forest nearby.

Hiding ?

“Hiding in Plain Sight!” Photo by Mike Crowley

After getting an inch or two of new snow for the past couple of days the snow is starting to pile up. I decided to take a walk in the forest on one of the deer trails, and see if I could find Blue Eyes and her fawn. After hiking for almost half an hour I saw a brown fawn looking at me through the heavy brush. Then all of a sudden I spotted Blue Eyes standing in front of the fawn looking right at me also. She was so well camouflaged in all the snow that it was almost impossible to see her. I don’t think that they thought I could see them standing there as I took this photo.
