Cold, Flu, Covid...continued

Knowing what virus you have matters 🧪

⏳ Catching the flu early can open the door to antiviral treatment.

📋 Accurate testing helps guide treatment, recovery timelines, and next steps.

At RightCare Clinic, we offer on-site multi-virus testing and physician evaluation in one visit—so you leave with answers, not guesses.

One thing we pay close attention to is how symptoms begin ⏱️

🤧 Colds often start gradually.
🤒 Flu tends to hit suddenly and hard.
🦠 COVID can look like either—which is part of what makes it so challenging.

These patterns can help point us in the right direction, but they don’t replace testing. When timing matters for treatment, guessing isn’t enough.

📖 This is part of a larger breakdown in our latest blog. Read more here: https://hubs.ly/Q042HSWB0

If you feel sick and can’t tell what it is, you’re not doing anything wrong 💙

Cold, flu, and COVID share so many symptoms that it often feels like guesswork, and sometimes, it is. The overlap is real, and the confusion is completely valid.

🔍 When symptoms alone aren’t enough, testing provides clarity and helps us create the right plan for your care.

📖 We explore why these illnesses overlap and what to do next in our latest blog.

As Emergency Physicians, we see the consequences of ignoring heart health ❤️‍🩹
February is American Heart Month, and from our perspective in emergency medicine, we want you to know: many of the heart emergencies we treat could have been prevented or caught earlier.

WHAT WE SEE IN THE ER:
Every day, we treat patients who ignored warning signs or didn't know they had risk factors. Chest pain, shortness of breath, heart attacks in people who thought they were "too young" or "too healthy."
The truth? Heart disease often develops silently for years before it becomes an emergency.

IMPORTANT NUMBERS TO KNOW:
Talk to your primary care provider about checking and tracking:
📊 Blood pressure
📊 Cholesterol levels
📊 Blood sugar
📊 Resting heart rate
Your doctor can help you understand what ranges are healthy for YOU based on your individual health history and risk factors.

HEART SYMPTOMS THAT NEED IMMEDIATE CARE:
🚨 Chest pain or pressure (especially with exertion)
🚨 Shortness of breath that's new or worsening
🚨 Irregular heartbeat or heart palpitations
🚨 Dizziness or fainting
🚨 Unexplained fatigue or weakness

Your heart health matters - even when you feel fine.

Ever notice you start coughing the moment you step outside in this cold? You're not alone ❄️🫁
Cold air is a common trigger for coughing and breathing issues - even for people who don't usually have problems.
Here's what's actually happening:

THE SCIENCE:
Your airways are lined with warm, moist tissue. When frigid air hits them:
▫️Blood vessels constrict rapidly
▫️Airways narrow to protect themselves
▫️Mucus production kicks into overdrive
Result = coughing, wheezing, chest tightness

This happens to everyone to some degree, but it's especially problematic for:
▫️People with asthma
▫️Those with COPD or chronic bronchitis
▫️Children (smaller airways react faster)
▫️Anyone exercising outdoors

PROTECT YOUR LUNGS THIS POLAR VORTEX:
✅ Breathe through your nose when possible (it warms the air naturally)
✅ Wrap a scarf loosely over your nose and mouth
✅ Keep your rescue inhaler WARM - cold temps can make it less effective
✅ Limit outdoor exposure when temps drop below 10°F
✅ Warm up slowly when coming back inside

⚠️ WHEN TO SEEK CARE:
❗Wheezing that doesn't improve after warming up
❗Chest tightness or pain that persists
❗Shortness of breath that continues indoors
❗Using your rescue inhaler more than usual

X-Ray or CT Scan—which one do you need?
Think of an X-ray like taking a regular photo—it gives us a flat picture of what's inside. Perfect for checking broken bones, finding pneumonia, or seeing if something is stuck where it shouldn't be.
A CT scan is like taking hundreds of photos from every angle and stacking them together to create a 3D view. We use it when we need to see more detail—like checking for internal injuries after a car accident or looking at organs like your intestines, appendix or kidneys.

Quick examples:

Broke your wrist? → X-ray
Significant abdominal pain? → CT scan
Swallowed a coin? → X-ray
Severe headache after a fall? → CT scan

The bottom line: X-rays are great for bones and lungs. CT scans give us a detailed look at everything inside.

At RightCare Clinic, we have both on-site for same-day answers! Our board-certified ER doctors will evaluate you and order any imaging studies that are needed. 🏥

❄️It's 0° in Michigan with wind chills in the negative teens. Frostbite isn't just something that happens to mountain climbers—it can happen in your driveway in under 30 minutes.
Here's what we look for when someone comes in with cold exposure:
Early frostbite (frostnip) is reversible if you warm up right away. But once you see blistering or tissue that stays hard after warming? That's when you need medical attention.
If you're unsure, get evaluated. Don't tough it out.

When "it's just a virus" is actually good news 🩺

Your symptoms are real and your discomfort matters—even when antibiotics aren't the answer. Here's what you need to know:

✅ We can still help: Decongestants, breathing treatments, IV hydration, and clear guidance on recovery

📅 The viral timeline: Most respiratory illnesses peak at days 3-5 and resolve by days 8-10

🚨 Red flags to watch: Difficulty breathing, chest pain, high fever 3+ days, or symptoms that improve then suddenly worsen

Your need for relief is valid. Good medical care means the right diagnosis, effective symptom relief, and protecting you from unnecessary antibiotics that can cause harm.
